Thoughts on Alcohol?

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by Deleted Account, Dec 31, 2017.

  1. Just wanted to know the opinions of people on drinking.

    Here's my view:

    • I think a lot of time alcohol takes people down the slope step by step and makes them do stuff that they never would've done while sober.
    • For people struggling with depression, it becomes a go to response to escape reality which messes their lives up even more. (just like porn)
    • For people cheating on their spouses, it becomes an excuse. "We were really drunk and one thing led to another...".
    • Even though small amounts of alcohol is harmless, chronic drinking leads to terrible consequences. (look up : Mallory weis tear).
    • For the youth, going gaga over the pop culture which glorifies lust, alcohol, weed etc., it doesn't stop at alcohol.

To sum up. I think there's a hell lot more harm coming from alcohol than good. And I see no reason why someone would want to spent the limited period of his/her life by getting drunk and vomitting their eyeballs out.

And as Sheldon cooper says, "None of the significant discoveries were made by people who were having a 'good time'!"

    Have an awesome 2018 ahead.

  2. I agree with everything said here. I haven’t seen alcohol cause any good but I’ve seen it cause a ton of bad.

Every time I drink and get drunk was the entry for either more abuse to happen because I seem to attract it or to slide deeper in not good porn and desires

  4. Yup, just look at how successful it made the natives. Poison for the brain and soul. Strips our energy.

  5. Not really my cup of tea, but I'll have a beer here and there just because it has no sugar in it. Never gotten drunk.

  6. Words of the Buddha:
“Furthermore, abandoning the use of intoxicants, the disciple of the noble ones abstains from taking intoxicants. In doing so, he gives freedom from danger, freedom from animosity, freedom from oppression to limitless numbers of beings. In giving freedom from danger, freedom from animosity, freedom from oppression to limitless numbers of beings, he gains a share in limitless freedom from danger, freedom from animosity, and freedom from oppression. This is the fifth gift, the fifth great gift — original, long-standing, traditional, ancient, unadulterated, unadulterated from the beginning — that is not open to suspicion, will never be open to suspicion, and is unfaulted by knowledgeable contemplatives and priests.” (From AN8.39, tr. I drink in moderation a couple times a week. I think it’s bad when people abuse it, but we shouldn’t demonize it for those who are responsible.

Even if you don't tend to get addicted it doesn't make you function well. I, and I believe for genetic reasons will go like 1-2 years and have one beer or something and not have any interest. The last time I had an IPA and I felt messed up for a long time. Not only is there genetic predisposition towards being addicted but it seems a lot of people out there also does not have the enzyme to process alcohol, and the combination of what those two genes are probably does a lot to steer pepople toward or away from it - not to mention social conditioning growing up. I just didn't have the social part either so I think I was lucky in that all three factors made it almost impossible for me to have that particular addiction. But of course, being a loner lends itself to solitary stuff like PMO. (and yes of course alcoholics also drink alone)

A glass of wine a day is good for your health. It’s linked to a lower risk of heart attack, stroke and death from heart disease.

Yes, I know with resveratrol and stuff - which I take as a supplement and apparently there is a little evidence it helps reset circadian rhythm. And that's an easy one for me because of my makeup and background do not tend to get addicted, but if I'm at a social gathering from a recovery group or just includes people from such it's pretty much out. When I've taken liquid resveratrol I also notice it tastes a little like wine, for recovering alcoholics I wonder if that may be a problem for them.

I DO think my system does not process alcohol itself very well though, and being that wine has a relatively high alcohol content the best solution for me is probably just the supplement - not to mention that just costs a lot less. For the cost of a decent bottle of wine I can afford a decent dosage of resveratrol for like two months.

I see no reason to drink. Life is better without the stuff

  14. I enjoy red wine and the benefits of a glass, but I don't drink to get drunk. If I got into drinking a lot of alcohol I could see myself using it to mask my depression and use it to replace the addiction I'm getting over.

Everyone is different and some can drink more than others, but for me I've been drunk before and did not enjoy it. I'll stick to my wine. :)

  15. I was using alcohol as a replacement for pain killers (not getting blind) but 1-3 when my back was really bad. but that is the quickest way to build an addiction, lucky I switched the grog for physio and gym. back pain now feels like a dull muscle spasm, and I haven't touched the drink in a couple of months.

think your right, it leads to a lot of stupid behaviour.

Alcohol isn't bad in of it's self. What can lead to bad is the intention of which it is consumed. If the person consumes it to get drunk, than this is where the problem lies. This behavior is what often leads people to addiction and habitual drinking. If someone drinks wine because he merely enjoys it with his dinner, than there is nothing wrong with that.

  17. Alcohol is terrible shit, unless you can actually drink in moderation. I could very well be an alcoholic. I don't drink every day, but when I do drink I can't fucking stop. There's no telling how many times I've gotten drunk as fuck and either fell and hurt myself, tried to get into fights, embarrassed myself and woke up feeling unbelievably bad, yet I continue to drink. I have a problem.
This is so true. I've found that I rely on alcohol as a means to alleviate boredom. I can't just go to a buddy's house and sit and try to have a good time. I get so fucking bored and feel like I NEED a drink just in order to have fun. I'm not even joking. I'll get a few in me and feel better, but then I keep drinking and keep drinking, and before I know it I'm either making an ass out of myself or I'm puking my guts up and I'm about to have a terrible next day. Hangovers are like hell on earth, at least to me. So yeah, alcohol=evil shit.
