To you, is love a choice or a feeling?

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by Lazarus Shuttlesworth, Mar 31, 2018.

  1. Love is a choice. A crush is a feeling

  2. Elaborate, please.

  3. It's a feeling. You don't choose whether or not you love someone or something. When you eat a food you love, you never chose to actually enjoy it.

    EDIT: See below.

  4. A crush is random. You don't necessarily choose who you crush upon. Love, to me, is more of a choice. You could actually choose whether to love someone or not. People choose who they love. Love is often confused with a crush. I chose to love my mother and my father. I chose to love God and Jesus Christ. My actions as of now may not reflect that, but I love them. A crush is natural: you are attracted to beautiful hair and eyes. Love is a choice: you choose to love them for who they are. You select who you want to spend your life with. You may not realize it, but you choose to love all of the people you love.

  5. You choose to love the food because you enjoy its taste

  6. In my opinion it's a feeling but mostly a choice. Because when those butterflies and such naturally wore off and I saw all my SO's flaws and such, I made a choice subconciously or not and chose to accept and love him the way he was.

I could probably explain it better but I can't think of the proper words honestly, but I do know everyone sees and experiences love differently.

  7. Then what makes you eat that food again or even love it in the first place for that matter? People choose to eat something again because they like it whether it's because of the taste, texture, or smell, otherwise it doesn't make any sense at all. A food comparison doesn't work in this context.

  8. I think the emotions that come along with love aren't love, in and of themselves. There are emotions that come with love, but I believe love itself is a choice.

  9. You can eat it again by simply having a craving for it. You don't choose whether or not you suddenly wake up, thinking "man, for some reason, I'm really craving that smoothie I enjoyed a few weeks ago". You can choose to follow through on that craving or not, but you didn't decide to actually have that craving.

You don't make the concious decision of enjoying or disliking a food because you didn't decide how it tasted to you.

Again, they didn't choose to like/love the food.

EDIT: Upon further thought, I admit that this argument is a faulty comparison and upon consideration of other perspectives, I guess I can't really say love is more than one or the other. Either a choice or a feeling. My bad. :p Carry on.

I think I was confusing what's pleasing to actual love. Whoops. :p

  10. Then why do some people like bitter tasting foods and dislike candy?

  11. The problem with your argument is that you're equating liking something with love, and those aren't necessarily the same. Having a craving for food is not the same thing as loving another person. Love is more than just enjoying being around someone and wanting to do that more.

  12. Yeah, I had a response, but then I thought about it for a second and looked at it from other perspectives. I withdraw my earlier statement and fully admit to having a faulty argument.

  13. So, to change my stance, I would say love would be both. You can choose to accept the faults your significant other has and continue to love them despite said faults, but love is still an intense feeling of affection towards another being.

Just as a parent chooses to love and care for their children, as opposed to the antithesis, where the parent is abusive and distant. However, once you are experiencing love for someone, you can't just suddenly up and choose to stop loving them anymore, not unless the person recieving your affection has done something you consider unforgivable.

It’s a feeling. Then you choose.

Love is a choice, because the essence of love is self denial.

i think you can choose to love someone, even if you dont really like being with them. it shouldnt always be about following your heart or your (nether regions) hehe as sometimes it is not the logical way or most sensible decision. so yes i feel love is a choice but if you let god into your hearts you will always make the right choice. laura x

  19. It definitely starts as an overwhelming feeling, a need to be around the other person. But if you’re together for awhile it becomes more of a choice.
