Uhh.."Do one thing every day that scares you." challenge? :-)

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by I_can_and_I_will, Nov 29, 2017.

  1. This challenge is truly amazing.

Today I convinced my parents to start living a healthy lifestyle too.

I know this isn't something that scares me, but right now I have exams so I don't want to distrat myself.

I like to think of this as a warm up to the real challenge which I will do after a few days post exams :) :) :) :) :)

Hey buddy, you mean you decided to start eating healthy after the exams are done? Sorry, I didn't get it, can you please explain? :(

  3. No no. I have already started eating healthy foods. Even today I ate fruits instead of the usual junk, and I had my salads too.

What I did today was, I convinced my parents to start eating healthy foods too. Now they too eat salads and fruits and stuff. Which is awesome!

I was saying because I have exams, I'm not going out of my way to do anything scary, because doing that may be time consuming.

The real stuff that scares me, I will do after my exams when I have holidays.

Yesterday I failed, so I did the challenge today, with some really good results. Granted, I had few glimpses on facebook, but 95% of the time I spent productively. I cleaned my house, did the usual (meditation, 2 hours of programming etc.) and it was only 20:00. I go to sleep really late, so I had like 7 hours more to kill! I then worked on my music for about 5 hours, and my creative juices started flowing. I had a really fun day, and it was not really that hard to do! I recommend this to all of you, you won't regret it :D!

    Day 7

I couldn't do anything much yesterday due to some health issues. I do have a tendency to make a mountain out of a molehill and escape responsibility so I'm glad I forced myself to follow my day as close to my goals as possible without pushing myself too far even when I failed to wake up. This day really marks something important to me, in fact it might be a milestone because once I fail to wake up, I destroy the rest of the day and my entire streak, always.

I am so busy these days with some stuff, so I'll postpone this challenge for a week or so. Good luck to anyone doing it :)

    Day 9
I'm late in posting yesterday's task, I managed to give up some things that I thought made up my life. It's the hardest thing ever. I could give up PMO without any sad feelings because it was something I hated but there's are things that feel necessary yet do nothing but destroy us. My mind is screaming that it's a horrible decision but it says it everyday when I avoid porn so..I feel so vulnerable now but atleast I'm not hiding.

    Day 10

    Today's task:
Prepare a timetable. This might seem so silly that it doesn't even count as a fear to be overcome but my procrastination gets in the way and I always end up running away from this task. Not anymore.

    Wear Sunscreen.
If I can offer you only 1 tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.
You are not as fat as you imagine.

Sorry, just lost myself in nostalgia there for a min. Thanks @I_can_and_I_will

I haven't been updating this journal since the past week due to severe procrastination and some bad fails at getting things done. I will lay off these tasks for a while, the moment I think of "fear" I end up wanting to escape doing the task. It's becoming hundred times harder to deal with stuff when I think of it as something to overcome, which is counter-productive. But I want to inculcate this habit into my lifestyle someday (very soon, in a month or two), not perhaps a daily habit but I surely wanna do some things that I dread but which are a necessary part of life.

  20. Trying to do something similar myself. I have really bad social anxiety (socialised like, a handful of times in the entirety of 2017). I recently decided I needed to take it more seriously, so I saw a psychiatrist about it. They prescribed me a couple of medications to take as needed on days where my anxiety is particularly bad, or when I have to attend a social event etc. She wanted to give me SSRIs/anti-depressants to take daily for it, but being a former drug addict I don't want to be dependent on any substance ever again, and so that's really a last resort I'd only consider if I was making no progress. I told her I'd reconsider them if I haven't made any progress by next summer, but until then I told her I wanted to try to make progress without taking anything daily.

So, feeling a little more confident now that I know I have things to fall back on if the anxiety gets too much, and also: not wanting to end up on SSRIs, I'm now more motivated than ever to actually do that. To make some real sizeable progress before summer 2018 hits.

So I've started a "social anxiety journal", it's a private journal on my computer, but it's sort of like my NoFap journal, for tracking my progress. Each day I'm trying to do at least one thing that causes me some anxiety. I'm starting off with easier things, like going to the shops, or going for an evening walk etc - but I intend to gradually make the tasks more difficult, until I'm actively socialising with some regularity. Then in my journal I'm taking notes about the activities I tried, and how it actually went - so I can kind of help defeat my negative thinking, since often the activities don't cause anywhere near as much anxiety or discomfort as I anticipate before doing them.

So far I've done pretty well. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday I've managed to face my anxiety in different ways, and I haven't even had to try out either of the medications I was given yet (despite the fact that I have more than enough of both to use them relatively frequently if needed).

As unpleasant as it can be facing your fears/anxieties, it's also quite exhilarating. It feels really good at the end of the day being able to reflect on having actually made some real progress versus my anxiety.

Good luck on your goals @I_can_and_I_will - don't let procrastination get the better of you. My advice is to start off with an easy task each day if you're struggling to motivate yourself to do it. I'm not sure what makes you anxious, only what makes me anxious - but you could start the day off with something that you find easy. Maybe for you that's saying hi to a stranger, or complimenting someone. Or maybe it's something easier like going for a walk or something like it is for me.
