I don't know if this would go here but I'll put it here because I've seen meditation mentioned many times by people who have put together nice PMO-abstaining streaks.

I am currently on Day 12 of a streak, which is really nothing to get too excited about but I believe part of the reason it's been a lot more smooth this time around is because of meditation. So, I'm putting some links here to help people who really don't even know where to start with it (although you'd think sitting or laying down while focusing on your breath doesn't take too much instruction - yet it does help to have some guidance, as I've found).

3 Secrets to Deep Meditation (this endorses the "countdown" approach that I've found beneficial)

Mindfulness Meditation (This one is about more than just meditating but also about being mindful - meaning just observing what you're doing, what you're thinking, etc., without judgment. This can be done throughout the day and it's also been helpful)

Here are The Honest Guys. They have a bunch of Guided Meditation videos and videos helping you to relax, be mindful or just to help you go to sleep. They've helped me. I think these are great for beginners because it's all guided and all you need is a pair of headphones and listen. Then, later you can do some on your own with some of their same ideas/techniques. (They have all sorts of themes, too. Some non-fiction and some are fiction based.)

Finally, here's a clip to some meditation/relaxation music. I've found a bunch of them that have like 2-3 hours of continuous music. I like the ones that are like "meditation music for the cosmos" but there are so many out there. It can help set the mood before you meditate or you could listen while doing it, I suppose.

    Best,

Yup. I think it's very important, especially mindfulness mediation. It helps you get better at catching emotions, impulses and urges sooner and sooner.

I think the key is learning to watch thoughts, not suppress them. Although I read several years ago that thought suppression makes the thoughts even more frequent, I had forgotten about that. The urges were getting even stronger the more I tried thought suppression.

So now I just try to observe the thought or urge and "label" it like they teach in meditation. That helps keep your pre-frontal cortex active and stops your amygdala from taking over the steering wheel

Yes, I think there had been times when I knew acknowledging negative emotions and living them actually soon had therapeutic effects (like when feeling sad, owning it and experiencing it soon turned into a joy of its own that's hard to explain but I think it's just part of the whole human being existence where we are supposed to have all the emotions, get lessons and experience things like change, success, failure, etc.). And since I've been reading more and more about mindfulness and meditation, the more I am seeing that they can be valuable and even absolutely necessary to have more calmness and confidence (among other things) not just regards to pmo but all of life.
