Vertigo & Lightheadedness

I've dealt with vertigo and lightheadedness for years. Doctors have always told me it's anxiety related. My suspicion is that the symptoms came on as a result of excessive p/m/o starting in my mid teens. I've practiced edging for nearly two decades and these symptoms have remained. I notice that when I try to abstain (on day 7 now - my longest streak in months), these become more frequent and difficult to deal with.

Sleep deprivation is a definite factor. I usually fall asleep around or after midnight and am up by 6 AM most mornings. Up until a year or two ago, I was going to sleep as late/early as 4 or 5 AM. Horrible, I know. I'm trying to do better.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? If so, has your condition improved and what did it take?

This happens to me often. They are probably withdrawal symptoms, which gets better as one goes on staying clean.

That too, is PMO-related. There were a few times in the past when I PMO-ed right before sleep, and I had severe sleep disorder that night. Now, I cannot say my sleep quality is very good, but not too bad either. I believe things will improve as I go on with my journey, provided that I don't keep relapsing, that is.

Do you have any inner-ear issues? How about tinnitus or deafness?

Yes, but just short-term and mild tinnitus, especially when I am not taking good care of myself. And I also heard other people reporting this symptom as a result of PMO.

I've read that it can very likely be caused by stress. Vertigo, too. And now that you mention it, I too have read on various forums about plenty of other p/m/o addicts having dealt with vertigo. I'd really love to know more about how and why it comes on and is exacerbated but "science" probably wouldn't even look into a connection, much less try to establish one.

Strictly speaking, various "self-destructive behaviors" which deplete one's energy, can cause many symptoms, including vertigo. Among all of those poor living habits, PMO is one of them (and probably one of the worst). As a result, it is true that stress can also cause vertigo, and it is also true that many brothers with years of PMO history may experience it too.

In general, it is usually multiple destructive behaviors combined which results in these chronic health problems. However, in modern science, it is common for doctors, scientists and researchers to try to isolate single factors contributing to those bodily symptoms. Therefore, it is often hard for them to find consistent results, given that every person is different, in terms of "inherit energy level", as well as the way they live (lifestyle, habits, occupation...etc).

I guess I just don't think that anyone would or could challenge Big Porn. As I'm sure you know, like pharmaceutical drugs, porn is very much considered to be a sAfE ANd eFfEcTiVe therapy. Using it and masturbating regularly is said to be "normal and healthy." I do understand what you mean about the isolation of single factors and that's a valid argument as a study could only be so extensive. Regardless, I'm a skeptic that we'll ever get a lot of the answers we seek.

I also agree that multiple destructive behaviors are the most common cause of chronic health issues. Rarely, if ever, is it only down to one habit. In my case, I've gone through years of subpar sleep as well (a lot of that because of p/m/o). Then there's edging. I'm far from perfect.

In a nutshell, dopamine, the feel good hormone is released by porn viewing in large quantities, just like if you use cocaine.
Over time your brain reduces the receptors for dopamine because of the flooding amounts released.
This means that your brain now has less dopamine response, and since dopamine is used for so many functions in the body, not just feel good, that it could well affect mood, and movement, as well as balance and vertigo.

7 days is only a short time, but if you can avoid porn for at least a month, you should get a much better idea of how the brain is repairing and resetting itself.
Then you can see if you are feeling an improvement in vertigo and other symptons you are currently experiencing.

Cheers for now.

I actually haven't ever looked into how Dopamine or other Neurotransmitters specifically could potentially cause vertigo and similar issues. I need to do that. As someone with Adrenal Fatigue, I can only imagine that this has something (or everything) to do with various imbalances and deficiencies.
