Anyone who plays videogames these days knows about these "loot crates" which are a randomized collection of in game items only obtainable through purchase and not actually playing the game.

Usually consisting of cosmetics items but also sometimes items that give players an advantage.

These game companies are using casino tactics like psychologist designed noises, lights, flashes etc... to take advantage of people.

It's a dopamine feedback loop like porn is.

If you played call of duty, gears of war, etc.. you know what I'm talking about.

I just wanted to bring some awareness to this as I feel this is a big problem and I see the same underhanded tactics of porn being used here.

It effects kids and adults, it's not right. I know there must be people who fell in this trap.

I've spent an obscene amount of money on these "loot crates" and I wanted to get the word out, stop supporting these companies, stop buying in to this casino like gambling in videogames.

If it's cosmetic only, ignore it, just play the game.

If there are player advantages, find a new game.

They're kinda big in some Steam areas, as well. I despise all the market microtransactions as a major change in the gaming world. Unfortunately, in generaly, it's almost certainly here to stay. It's almost getting like Hunger Games out there with all the behind-the-scenes politics and corporations. When a game is Pay-2-Play and you are losing lots of time, I agree.. bail on it.

Thanks for the PSA and sharing your experience :)

I try not to buy games that contain loot boxes. They need to be regulated.

I understand the idea of the loot box, but the same can be said with almost any game. If you are playing Diablo III, you are getting loot crates. It just may take a bit of effort to get them. If you don't want the effort, you used to be able to buy stuff with real money when the auction houses were still standing. I also dislike DLC that's loaded on the disc, but stuck behind a pay wall. I'm looking at you Capcom!

That sounds crazy paying for in-game loots. I used to play WOW on private servers and they had "donations" for gear. It was unbelievable! People were paying hundreds of dollars for in-game gear that doesn't actually exist. To make things worse was that "donated" gear actually ruined the servers and gameplay. Originally there was one server with donations [ If I recall correctly], but then the developers got greedy and brought it to all the servers and it ruined the server.

Smite has this crate bullshit. Even wow added cosmetic items and level boosts. Don't like the direction gaming is headed. Played my whole life but think I might give it up for good.

  8. I've never really cared because I don't play online, but it seems more and more games have them now including singleplayer as well. Some games do loot boxes better than others, like I enjoy OMDU! on the Ps4 and have avoided buying anything, but it seems most of them like battlefront 2 you need to pay otherwise you'll get smoked online.

If the loot crates require real world money then they're bullshit. Injustice 2 has mother boxes, but they can only be earned by completing missions or using earned credits. While there are micro transactions it's not done with boxes you pay for the shader you want and that's it. You can also earn all the shaders as loot. It just takes awhile.

  12. Can't you just... not buy them? I mean if it gives people an advantage, then yeah, maybe pick a different game. But tons if games have in-game additional purchases. It's your choice to buy them or not, or to not even get the game if you don't want to spend a bunch of additional money on in-game purchases. It doesn't seem to me to be some big issue that needs to be addressed. Just don't get those games, and if someone wants to blow all their money on loot boxes, that's their stupid choice to make.

  13. Well it's still stupid, I think they should be slapped with a gambling label because that's what it essentially is. One of my main beefs is the fact they even put them in singleplayer games, they'll make a game frustratingly unfair or difficult just to get you to buy a crate or item to make it easier.

The whole thing is stupid and pointless, other than the fact they're greedy and obviously want to exploit people to make money. Making things unobtainable or unfair by locking them behind loot crates is a cheap and dirty move.

  14. Yeah, I suppose that's true. It is dumb and annoying. But I don't think it should be like... regulated or illegal or something. Not that anyone said it should, but I'm just sayin.

  15. No I don't think it should be illegal, but there should be labels as it's bullshit what they get away with on those mechanics. Like for people with addictive personalities or spending problems like I used to have, they struggle the most as they feel a need to purchase to win or succeed at the game because they're not getting anywhere, even though it was designed for that very purpose.

Like I play some games that actually do have loot boxes and while it takes a while to get the boxes, at least you don't need to spend real money to get them and it's not really forcing you to buy anything.

All in all I prefer the good old days where developers weren't greedy and actually made good and fun games to play, as opposed to throwing them out the door and slapping boxes and microtransactions to get money. That stuff used to happen in only free to play games so they could actually make money, and now seeing how regular games cost around $80 putting in things to intice people to pay more is a shit and cruel thing to do.

  16. I guess I haven't really ever been surprised by those in-game purchases. Most of the games I've experienced that has that kind of stuff I just roll my eyes and stop playing it or something, because I was kind of expecting that to happen eventually. But I think it also would depend on how much it costs you upfront to buy the game. Like with free games, I don't really get annoyed about in game purchases, because I expect they will be there. But I suppose if you paid 80 bucks for a game, it would probably be really annoying.

It sucks that they're predominantly targeting kids with this. The backlash of star wars may cause a change in the industry though.
Some games have optional micro transactions, others disguise them as being optional when you start only to pull you down the rabbit hole. The issue with these is that the publishers of these games are usually the ones forcing these in. The developers understand that these tactics are anti consumer.

  18. If it's free yeah I feel the same way, but when you pay for a game I have mainly two issues with it. It's a huge slap to the face and blatant that they made the game with only one thing in mind, and my most frustrating one is I've played some that are so difficult to beat enemies unless you get the "best gear".

We never had this bs back in the PS2 or PS3 age... People used to tell me when microtranstions where first coming out that it wouldn't get worse, I just laughed because look at where we are now, people are so numbed and used to it and that's saddening. Dead Space 3 was an excellent example.

  19. I understand the whole concept on why they're talking about kids, but that wasn't the main issue and nor was it the "big picture" so to speak. They turned it into something else unfortunately.

  20. Micro transactions in general just rub me the wrong way, the bittersweet thing about them is that in reviews I can see too much DLC or loot crates and say "Nope not buying it, not even spending a couple bucks to rent it." As I'm slowly aging I can't seem to really invest myself in games so I'm not motivated to spend 5000 + hours to find a special grip for COD. I'm currently playing through Horizon Zero Dawn and wow you can play as is and feel spectacular, I've heard the same things about The Witcher 3. Some companies out there give me hope but it seems like they're dwindling.
