I'm 21 and gay (edit: bisexual), never had sex, and have few "real" friends or hobbies. I'm a college graduate but underemployed. Masturbation since age 17, porn since 18. Withdrew from people and became depressed when I was 19. My situation has gotten better since then, but I'm still not as lively and self-motivated as I was in high school. I respond to stress by withdrawing to bed and using the Internet. It's not a healthy coping mechanism, and I need to find some way out of this rut. PMO escalated gradually from 3x/week to daily to 3x/day, give or take. Did 2 this morning. I'll try to go to sleep tonight without doing it again.

Welcome! I'm glad you are here.

I can identify because I was you 30 or so years ago. I wish I'd found this site then, but of course, neither it nor the Internet existed then. That gives you a great advantage!

Your comments suggest that you kind of know what some of the solution needs to be: getting out of the "shell."

You mention depression. Do you mean in the medical sense? I ask, because if you have or are seeking medical guidance, I think you should pay attention to that. (Sometimes we go to doctors, but then we don't like their advice, so we go looking for another way out. I don't want to be in competition with what your doctor may be saying, because I am in no way qualified for that role!)

If you look around, and spend time here that you would otherwise have spent on porn, I think you will find wisdom, people who are like you (and then you won't feel so alone), and you will find that the knowledge you gain is empowering. That's a basis for hope.

We're all here to help each other. Please keep coming back!

Thanks for replying. I've never been to any sort of mental health professional, though I believe I was depressed in the past. So I'm not looking for medical advice. I just want to change my habits.

    DogDays:

Well, I would say this: if, indeed, you experience a condition you label "depression," it may be that what you're experiencing has a physiological dimension, as is true with "clinical depression." If true, then it needs treatment, just as an infection does.
