What are you replacing your porn habit with?

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by beforeseptember, Sep 23, 2017.

  1. Hi fellow Fapstronauts,

I am writing this as I near the end of my 8th day on NoFap. If you would like to read more about my journey, click the link under my day counter.

I wanted to write this because I had a question for myself as I am now over a week of being PMO free, and it is this: what am I replacing my porn habit with?

Most of us are quitting PMO because of its detrimental effects--low confidence, addiction, poor sex life--but if we look at PMO in a more general sense, we see that it is similar to a lot of other poor habits like video games, Netflix, etc. What I mean is that porn offers high rewards for virtually no work or effort.

Many of us experience increased levels of motivation when we are on NoFap because our brain is sending signals to actually DO SHIT in order to feel good. This led me to start many good habits since my NoFap journey. But now, at about 8 days in, I am feeling a little depressed, similar to how I felt when I was in the thralls of my PMO addiction. Why? I realized that although I am no longer using PMO, I basically replaced my porn use with other high stimulus behaviors that require little effort (e.g. YouTube, social media, Netflix). So although I am recovering from some of the negative side effects porn in particular induces, my brain is still having a hard time linking real rewards with real work. The resulting feeling is one of meaninglessness, low motivation, depression, etc. We have cognitive dissonance, because we know what we should be doing (homework, studying, creativity, exercising), but we don't have the DESIRE to do it.

How do we get the desire back? It is simple. If we remove the high stimulus from our lives, we will naturally seek it elsewhere. If we don't think ahead, then we will seek it in mindless entertainment after quitting porn (this is what happened to me). But if we remove all low quality, effortless, super stimulus from our lives, then we will naturally be drawn to other sources that require more effort (i.e. GETTING YOUR SHIT TOGETHER).

While I am going to stay on NoFap, I want to start today by reexamining my media consumption patterns and habits. If you are doing NoFap and are feeling "low", and if it isn't a flatline, ask yourself, "What did I replace my porn habit with?"

I haven't found anything concrete to replace the old PMO with yet, but I think I'll start looking for a new job. It's been something I've wanted to do for a few years now, but something, mostly PMO, lack of confidence and depression, always kept me down. I have a decent job, but for the last few years it has not been very challenging, and looking forward there does not seem to be much future in it for me. The economy is better now then it was a few years ago. So, as much as I dislike job hunting, I'll have to get my but moving, bite the bullet and start pounding out resumes and cover letters.

  3. Hi!
I don't know if this is coincidence but exactly the same conclusions came to me today.
I was angry on myself most of the last years while PMOing and last months on NoPMO that I'm doing nothing and I'm interested in nothing. But since dopamine receptors are numb and react only on high doses of dopamine usual life and hobbies will be always less atractive than any movies, games or at least P and M. But high quality rebooting without any stimulants like media or orgasm (also without sugar, nicotine and caffeine I believe) will allow us to naturally feel pleasure from usual life and activities but firstly it takes time to reboot. I personally always required to feel desire for any hobby or activity to start doing it or practice it but today I became aware of some unknown part of my reboot and brain functioning and now I feel I'm free to do anything and not waiting to feel it.
P.S. I was binging on internet for last 9 days and it's nearly no less destructive (or rather numbing) than P for me .

I replaced porn with study and looking for work (hopefully working instead soon lol).

Some days I don't feel like doing anything, but I tell myself "at least I didn't pmo today". But yes overall have to do all the things we should have been doing in the first place. We would be surprised at what we can accomplish!

Also this forum is great and informative, but I try to keep it under 1hr browsing per day. Being online is like being behind enemy lines...

Reading. I joined my library about three weeks ago and I've read about five books since. I always moaned that I enjoyed reading but never had the time/motivation to just sit down and do it, but now of course I have so much more time on my hands due to quitting PMO.

    life!

I try to have balance everyday. So everyday I try to do

    Some work
    Some exercise
    Something Social
    Something Creative
    Something chill and relaxing

I find the days I do at least one thing from each of these categories are my best days.

Exercise (running, walking, gym) and learning new things (programming) were my picks. I also started cooking for myself, no fast food no delivered food, if I don't make it myself, I'll go to sleep hungry!

I recently started reading again. In less than a week I had finished one book and I have started another book about Russian history which is really great.
another program that I have in mind but I havent started yet, is studying. I want to fill my time with some positive activity and make good habits out of them.

You can replace your porn habit with anything ,in which you are better than anyone else.....and make yourself useful for this mankind....

  13. :) glad this thought was serendipitous for you. I think that is why we do the whole "no pmo" even when our goal is to quit porn, it offers a more efficient reboot. Stopping other stimulants can be really beneficial too I suppose. Thanks for your thought!

You definitely have a point that I really didn't think before. I just started Nofap like 8 days ago and since then my brain really wants to watch youtube videos. I realized that is just another way for my brain to get rewarded with almost no work. BUT I Won't LET THIS GO ON! I am joining a gym nearby my house, I found a guy that might be able to help me (since I have little experience in the gym). I am also reading much more and sleeping at 11:30 - 12 pm (which is sooooo good) compering to where I used to be at!
Anyways I think that is not about the radical changes that we do but rather how consistent we can be at doing those changes...
That reminded me that I must go to the gym at least for 10 min.... Everyday I see my dreams! :)

  16. You're spot on about everything, OP. If we replace garbage with garbage, how much progress are we actually making? I struggle with going on facebook way too often. The good things I'm replacing PMO with are music and exercise, both while playing drums which I do for at least an hour on most days. Another one I've been wanting to do is start reading regularly, I keep putting it off. My warped mind doesn't want to work that hard.

  17. Yeah... I suppose Facebook and Youtube are the "lesser of two evils", but we still need to graduate to substantial, healthy stimulus. I'm very happy to see that this post is helping people :)

SO I can come to the conclusion that I needed to change the reward system that I currently have on my mind. I am super addictive to Steven Colbert "Late Night Show" and also to a channel on Youtube that summarized the biggest games on (soccer around the world) I call it football and (I think everywhere except the US) Anyways my point is that from now on if I want to watch any of those videos I will do so if I first finish something important. Like finishing homework, reading a great book, working out, or meditate. And only for 15 minutes every time. Small change but super useful!
What do you ppl think about this?

I work 7 days a week at two different jobs. One at a gas station and another as a cook at a restaurant. Working has to be the best way to take your mind off pmo. Literally no better way I could think off, plus your making money. Only downside is that you won't have alot of free time. Which in turn is actually really good for you. You create a routine, and work at it every day, getting better, skills get sharper, life gets better period. Make it happen.
