What if addiction is not a disease? success stories?

Hi all, as you know - there is a popular disease model for addiction that's been around for a while...

Recently, some researchers disagree with this model - claiming addiction is a dysfunctional bad habit vs disease (ref: Dr. Marc Lewis) and alternatives to 12 steps - such as smart recovery seem to offer more empowering perspectives

i am looking to hear more long-term success stories from users like you.

I am currently in SLAA and frankly - find it depressing at times...I am hearing from people who are in their 60's and 70's who've been going to SLAA since the 90's and still struggle with fantasy and/or sex addiction (which also ties into porn use and the fantasy porn brings) ....not where i want to be!! How can people be doing 12 steps over and over again for years and still suffer from sexual anorexia, addiction and obsessive fantasy crushes over unavailable people?

this "lack of hope" i see in these meetings is encouraging me to discover the latest research on addiction and learn about all of the psychological, spiritual and scientific approaches to healing long term

would love to hear success stories

Dude, if it is a disease or not, it doesn't matter. Addiction is harmful to your body and mind. Is smoking a disease? No, but it's an addiction that harms your body and mind to the point that you might develop a letal disease. It is the same thing with porn addiction. This thing might evolve to a deep depression, social anxiety, ocd or other mind diseases that can also be deadly. So focus your strength on your recovery. I'll be here if you need.
