Today is Ash Wednesday, and so I'm challenging myself to stay away from PM for the next 40 days until Easter. Last year when I posted a similar message, I received some grief from folks who said that it was not wise to give myself an ending date like Easter, but I made it to Easter and well beyond that into the summer before I relapsed. Having a concrete goal like an abstention during Lent is beneficial for me, so please don't take that away from me. After all, what works for some people may not work for someone else. I just ask instead for your support and, if you are so inclined, your prayers that my Lenten journey will be fruitful, as I pray as well for all of you that your own recovery journeys will be fruitful. Thank you.

I, too, will attempt to stop PMO for the period of Lent. Good luck to you on your effort!

Phantomstranger, I do want to ask, however: The purpose of "giving up" something for Lent is to "suffer" out of regard for Jesus' suffering. Thus, giving up something for Lent that is a bad habit that you wished to be rid of anyways is not really the idea behind Lent. So quitting smoking, cutting out sugary drinks, etc. are not really candidates for a Lent sacrifice.

That said, I AM following you and attempting to "give up" PMO for Lent. Why? because I know it will be a struggle. I would say the "suffering" is related to ignoring my overwhelming urges and the "pain" of withdrawal symptoms.

I pray that God helps us.

I am also giving up PMO for Lent. I am doing this because I love Jesus but also because I need to rid myself of this self-destructive lifestyle. Good luck! Prayers to all of you
