What is your optimum retention period?

Back on NoFap. Have been thinking a fair deal about how to deal with ejaculation or retention over the past few days. Also did online research on the topic.

It is safe to say that there is no real trustworthy source (i.e. a scientific paper) ultimately confirming or denying benefits and/or harms of long-term SR (semen retention). However, the majority of posts agree that there are significant benefits and only little downsides on rentention.

Here are a some sources a quick googling reveal:
- https://www.taylorjohnson.life/semen-retention-guide/#how-often-should-a-man-ejaculate
- https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/semen-retention
- https://www.healthline.com/health/healthy-sex/semen-retention

Right now my gut feeling and (admittedly short) experience is that SR is benefitial both mentally and physically.

Still I am unsure wether something like periods of 2-3 weeks of SR followed by an intentional release is the way to go... or going into full PMO mode for many weeks or months is benefitial.

What are your experiences on this topic?

P.s.: Here is a plot (I do like plots :)) of sexual pleasure as a function of intercourse time (=SR time during coetus) which I stole from Taylor Johnson's page, a guy who seems to have devoted himself on this topic.

Retain for 2-3 weeks, then release with sex. Then retain again. I feel going beyond 3-4 weeks start to get uncomfortable and I just really like sex so why not

Hehe, this resonates a lot with me. 2 - 3 weeks would be a dream period.
...Anything beyond 10 days of SR and then intentional release with good long sex sounds superbly delicious...

However, not getting carried away during sex and holding it is super-hard imho.

Any good positive affirmations, techniques, life hacks around here for more success with SR while having sex?

I dont hold it in while havijg sex. When I have sex I release. Its that simple

It takes about one month to feel the full benefits. If you have a partner, releasing once a month will help you to still feel your energy surging as you go about your day without feeling drained.

I hear that you need approximately 74 days to complete the cycle of semen generation to reabsorption, so that tells me that you need more than that duration to take full advantage of it? I also hear that you need much longer to allow multiple reabsorption process for full effect (~2yrs?) I am still new to this journey, but I am hoping to be able to get there through achieving non ejaculatory orgasm eventually... but at this time, I am still too early on in this journey that I am trying to just avoid all PMO together, and retain, manage urges through transmutation techniques....

IMG_0574.jpegYour ideal rate is going to vary whether you’re in a relationship or not to be honest. If your single, retaining can be much easier, assuming you have self control.

There are many users here who innocently say “this and that” multiple times, so after reading it 4, 5, 10 times, we tend to take these claims as true and spread this information ourselves, making the possible false claim even more true... but unfortunately there is no science behind this. As a general rule, it would be best to post information WITH links to sources from proven scientific/medical references.

True. However, the rise in testosterone after 5-7 day abstinence is proven and can be found in multiple scientific papers. But aside from that, you are right. A lot is placebo or not proven yet.

Isn't this a general rule for internet or really anything in life?

Any and every info you consume need to be vetted by yourself one way or the other, even there's medical/scientific paper on it and such medial/scientific evidence could be completely overturned by the discoveries in the future...

I've learned that through being close to medical science and biohacking arena that there are so many things that are being debunked which actually had so called scientific study and evidence. I don't disagree in principle, but there are many things that are yet being able to prove scientifically but anecdotal evidence from the human history shows otherwise.

Also, everyone's body is different so there's always aspects of a need to experiment and see for yourself.

I use info I get from internet as a pointer / an idea for me to further evaluate what I want to do. Some work, some don't, but being mindful and honest to self, and learn and improve along the way. Rinse and repeat.

True, I read that paper myself, but the same paper also say that after 7 days the testosterone levels tends to return back to its original value, so unless you want to have sex exactly every 7 days, there's no real testosterone "boost" after 7 days.

Certainly science is not written in stone and is constantly evolving, but I tend to give more credit to a scientific reference than some user's feelings that are quickly taken as 'true' by all forum users. We are not talking about newly introduced drugs whose adverse effects (variable for each individual) are not fully known (even after years), but about the cycle of sperm reabsorption and production or the effects of supplements that, already -from human testing- have not caused anything like what they were hypothetically supposed to promise. If I take specific supplements to increase testosterone and then, in controlled tests, testosterone does not increase (this on everyone who take these supplements), there is little to understand. Most of the times -without medical check- is just placebo effect.

Yeah, but read the paper until the end, please:

"The subjects of group 2 (n = 8) who continued abstinence, their testosterone concentrations did not show peaks any more (Table 1, Fig.2) . These showed that, if there was no ejaculation, there was no 7-day periodic change in serum testosterone level"

Meaning: after 7 days, the testosterone return to its original level and never increase anymore, unless you ejaculate again.

Would you happen to have a link to the paper, please?

@all: Thanks for all the input on this topic!! :)
