We can all attest to the harmful effects of pmo, yet there seems to be very little attention paid to the damage of it. I think the harmful effects are more widespread than the general public thinks.

It seems like every time this topic is brought up, people, even doctors, say that the porn is only harmful for very few people and for most people it's normal and even healthy. I would go on a limb and say that the majority of people that view porn experience harmful effects and may not be aware of them.

Is this a similar situation that earlier generations experienced with cigarettes? Do you think that psychologists will uncover all the damage that is being done by porn and society will change its view on porn the same way society changed its view on cigarettes? If so, how long do you think this will take?

In any controversial area like this where a new view is challenging the status quo it's helpful to ask who stands to gain and who's going to lose if the new idea becomes accepted. In this case all the people who view porn and claim there's no harm stand to lose, along with the billion dollar porn industry, along with those so committed to the 60s sexual revolution dogma that you can't have too much of anything associated with sex - to name but a few. So that's quite a body of conservative opinion. I think the analogy of tobacco is spot on.

On the other hand there are those of us who have suffered and know it and are doing something to change opinion plus parents concerned about the next generation, enlightened legislators and faith leaders.

So, there's a hill to climb but I think we are leading the charge and the science is unaswerable.

I would think it's like the situation with global warming. It's there but people don't realize it because they don't want to

In this case they probably don't want to because people enjoy getting pleasure from pornography. And let's face it, until nofap many people never realized there was something wrong with them and when they did, the last thing they would think of is that the porn is the cause

Any big change of public opinion occurs generationally. The views of one's parents mix with what a child is taught and exposed to elsewhere to form his or her own world viewpoints. And historically it has taken a long time but has sped up recently.

Take for example, smoking vs gay marriage. Smoking has been a cash crop for many centuries and it wasn't until doctors were able to link it to lung cancer in the 60's/70's that people considered they were bad. The 1998 MSA Agreement with the US government pretty much wrote the future for mass produced tobacco. For those that don't know, the 1998 MSA banned nearly all cigarette advertising and required the tobacco companies to pay billions to the gov't for cancer victims over the next few decades. To guarantee that this money would come in, it made it illegal for companies not owned by the Big Four to sell cigarettes. It's a fascinating legal phenomena and there's lots of controversy over its legality.

Compare this to gay rights, which has moved really quickly recently. In 2008, more states banned gay marriage than not but 2012 was a huge victory for the movement, gaining rights in like 8 states or something like that. I think in the current day, maybe because of the Internet or issue ballots, it's easier and faster to sway public opinion. Even the US Supreme Court cited public opinion in its gay marriage rulings. Depending on your legal philosophy, they aren't supposed to do that and are meant to represent an older more conservative and harder to sway generation. Sorry for ranting, I just love this topic.

As for porn, I see it being a family issue. Most guys here fell into the PMO trap when they got their own computer. Sometimes I'll try to imagine what I'll say to my son when he gets that computer or starts noticing girls. Hopefully it'll deter him before he has an opportunity. If all former porn addicts/Fapstronauts do that, they it'll slowly and exponentially grow into a sizable difference with each generation.

But we have a big opponent. Porn is a huge industry backed by free speech organizations and media companies. Plus, it's just naturally alluring if you don't know the facts. We've all been there.
