Why hi "there"?

Why not? It's the internet, people are situated on opposite ends of the globe. It's like calling someone in a gathering, if you simply say "hi" everyone in hearing range will misinterpret it. But if you point/gesture with "hi there", the person you intend to hail, will realise it. So, I suppose it's origin is something similar.

It's actually spelled "Hi their" because you don't want to assume someone's gender, so you use a gender neutral pronoun.

 

Because they're so ... far away... Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?

Uh hem.. But seriously it is not that common for both people to be really present anyway, let alone be present with each other and be right there with them in their experience. Closest thing might be an "I feel you" or something.

Would that be "lo their" then?

 

For better or worse I don’t think misgendering people was as big of a deal back then.
