    Hey guys,

Yesterday I had this video pop up in my suggested feed on youtube, and I decided to watch it.

It's a TedX talk by a guy named Ran Gavrieli, who is a social worker and speaker about sex and gender.

It does have a sort of feminist bent in some ways, but the message really resonated for me.

I'll share my thoughts in a post below, but wanted to put it up for new people here, in case it helps you.

The most impactful thing for me about this talk was that pornography is actually filmed prostitution.

In fact the word porn-ography if you break it down using etymology is this:

Pornae - a Greek word for Prostitute
Graphii - a Latin word for a recording instrument

In essence all that time I was watching porn, I was supporting prostitution. That idea sent shivers down my spine. If anything ever put the nail in the PMO coffin for me, it is this.

I am interested to hear the thoughts of others who watched it.

I am still watching, the segment where he talks about 'hands free porn' blew me away. Porn is really just about putting a penis into a woman's (if we're talking heterosexual porn) body and nothing more. And yes, it made me shudder when I thought about that, porn being filmed prostitution. Shocking.

Very good vid. Another shocking aspect of what he was saying is that by looking at as an example black older women the viewer is legitimising the filmed prostitution of black older women and the fact these women generally don't make it into old age for one reason or another, the consumer of porn is in some small measure contributing to the early tragic demise of these women. That's making me shiver just thinking about it.

The fact we can sit down, go to a porn site and find what we want and get our release - in some ways we forget the brutality of what goes on behind all of that just so we can get our momentary brain high.

Also the part where he talked about 'social death.' That men can sit at a dinner table and openly discuss having visited a brothel at some point for sex maybe as a rites-of-passage thing at 18 or 21 and be applauded yet there would never be a time when a prostitute could contribute at the same dinner table on her experiences of having been ****ed by those very same men without feeling societal shame.

I'm glad I watched it. Thank you once again for putting it up. It's creating that distance in my head now between what I thought was acceptable and what I know now isn't.
