You wouldn't watch porn if you couldn't orgasm. The brain releases opioids during orgasm. Yes, morphine-like chemicals. We talk a lot about porn and how the novelty of it keeps our dopamine elevated. But dopamine is only involved in the anticipation of reward(sex, food, etc). Opioids are released when the reward is received(orgasm, eating, etc). Opioids are also involved in the reward circuit of the brain. Our addiction isn't just to the elevated dopamine and novelty of porn, but the final pleasure we feel when those opioids are released during orgasm. It's a shame when porn gets most or even all of the blame in our community. Sometimes I don't feel like watching new videos for novelty, I just want to orgasm to a video I've seen before. Sometime I don't even need a video, I can just mentally fantasize and imagine. We are essentially manipulating and abusing our brains into releasing this chemical during orgasm.

I guess it depends on the person... I don't usually feel the need to orgasm. What makes me relapse is the "need" for novelty.

  3. I recognise that, I also don't always need to find novelty to get to orgasm. Therese a couple of favourite videos I used to watch, just for the quick orgasm.

But I think it is both the opioids and the dopamine that keep us addicted. At least for me, both the edging/fapping to porn and the PMO give both a 'great' feeling. And If I recall correctly, high dopamine levels are required to reach arousal and orgasm.

It's the extremely high levels of dopamine in our brains when fapping to porn that does all the damage in our brains, as these dopamine levels are a lot higher than with normal sex. And while edging, these super high levels can stay high for unnatural long periods of time, up to hours and hours if we want to.

The problems like ED, DE, depression, loss of motivation, etc, that are caused by porn addiction probably are caused by the compensation mechanism of our brain when dopamine levels are too high. In an attempt to protect itself from these high dopamine levels, our brain cells become less sensitive to this dopamine by removing dopamine receptors, which probably causing all the problems like ED, DE, loss of motivation, sadness, etc.

But I guess too much opioids can also cause damage, as too much of something awesome usually becomes bad for us.. ;)

That is actually a very good question. I never thought about that. You would obviously think that if humans didn't have a libido they wouldn't watch porn. I mean what would be the point? The closest humans can come to a state of no libido is on certain medications. Like for example certain anti depressants. But what I can tell from a sample of one (me) is that even when I totally lost my libido I still watched porn. So that is kind of weird. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I was already used to it so I just continued my routine. If I didn't know about porn in that period maybe I would never have started with it since I wouldn't have felt anything and therefore not enjoyed it. Although I personally suspect that without the ability to orgasm or have a libido, humans would still be interested in the other/same sex (even visual images) just for the sake of reproduction.

Is anyone aware of any studies done on this subject?

I've edged to porn without orgasm many times.

I personally don't like orgasm all that much really it's just a relief to get it over with due to that crazy gotta piss feel compelling you to blow your load. Then when right after I orgasm I feel like I lost something and feel lousy.

Edging and orgasm are both sexual stimulation that release opioids in the brain. Orgasm just releases all opioids.

  8. Then explain to me why some people struggle with edging

My reference to orgasm is one and the same with edging, sexually stimulating yourself to release those chemicals in your brain to feel pleasure.
