Modesty. Our world would be so different if people didn't lead unrestrained hedonistic lifestyles. It seems like being rich and famous almost entails hedonism and abandonment of all virtue, well for a good portion of those in the entertainment industry this is true.

 

What is it about money and 'freedom of lifestyle' that influences people to 'let loose'? That is a philosophical question if I've ever asked one and you could write a book in response to it.

 

How about the blue collar factory workers making a low income but who LOVE pornography? They also have absolutely no virtue but they are on the opposite end of the 'net worth hierarchy' of our ass backwards uber capitalist dehumanized society of a world.

People need to write more books about how destructive porn is, from all kinds of viewpoints.

Recovery for myself is about doing the right thing and embracing virtue. I'll try to keep morality and virtue chatter to a minimum here as this is a 'science-based' forum that does not rely on morals.

 

Not relying on morals. This doesn't mean that porn is not dehumanizing. That has nothing to do with any faith, religion, or philosophy.

 

The beauty of mindfulness is that it has a myriad of scientifically proven benefits for both mind and body and simply requires consistent effort to practice without having to rely on morals or virtues per se.

 

I guess self improvement/development doesn't have to involve moral development or practice of virtue in any way, shape, or form. I like how ethical the 12 steps are but I don't practice them myself.

I think every person heals or overcomes this vice in a different way. Some people do it by gaining control over their lives to a certain extent and just don't struggle with porn anymore there isn't anything more to it.

For others it is a life and death soul war.

One of the sick realities about porn addiction is that escalation for many users involves using child pornography. The statistics are sickening if you want me to share them.

I bet some of you are looking forward to the mind neosporin and soul band-aids that will conclude this exercise. We'll get there. The cold truth must be confronted first.

I want to bring some 12 Step slogans in here. I'm not encouraging anyone to work the 12 Steps or go to meetings, I mean if you do that's great, but they certainly are not based on science and do not work for the majority of people studies show contrary to how often they are encouraged in many, many rehabs for instance.

These slogans are filled with universal insight. 12 Step meetings work for some people because of the community they provide to alcoholics and addicts (I don't even like labelling someone with those terms, everyone is just a human being struggling in this thing called existence) breaking away from toxic situations and people in their lives, or perhaps the alcoholic/addict/troubled human was the black sheep of their social circle and family and working the 12 Steps just seems to straighten them out on the inside due to the ethics of them and perhaps how they encourage one to grow spiritually.

I have nothing against them or meetings heck I might work through them once in this thread but who knows I'll take it as it comes.

I do want to encourage a book that received hate but it's a great book I've had someone tell me at an SOS meeting they read it and loved it. It offers hope for people who just cannot accept the 12 Steps or don't like how there is no science behind them maybe?

Dude like there is an article that seems to be supporting the 12 Steps but look at what it's titled come on that just defeats the entire logic of what Step One is telling me to do,

Not being founded on science the logic is loose and open to personal interpretation.

I'm not bashing it but right there I don't like this back and forth. Am I powerless or am I not powerless DAMMIT?!
