Similar to porn, since Youtube first existed, I have had periods of watching videos where I would find it difficult to stop, or to reduce my use.

Like porn, I would like to be able to leave this habit in the past. Has or is anyone else working through this?

What do people do to keep their internet usage healthy?

I'm glad that you chose to get rid of addictive YouTube., I am also staying away from YouTube, (It used to trigger me a lot),but not completely. There's also positives to YouTube., I changed my subscriptions completely, Now whenever I open YouTube, I find TED talks,Motivational stuff,Noah.BE Church's videos(and many other related to Nofap) and work related channels etc.,
This could be hard at the beginning, I had to stay away from YouTube completely at the beginning. But,soon you can find positives in there too..
Good luck, Have a nice day!

What @Gaston! said, use a timer application and give yourself say 30mins to do a certain task. Then move onto something else.

What I've done to stop youtube, iss block it off completely using the mac application called cold turkey. If you dont have an mac you can search for alternatives of cold turkey. For me, youtube is too addictive to just change my subscriptions and not get dragged into a rabbit hole so I've decided to block it off completely. This is the same as facebook, however I have not blocked the website but rather the news feed so looking at profiles and messages are still available.

    Cheers guys

Good ideas. I think blocking YouTube is a good idea. Kinda scares me how big a hole I will have to fill, but I think that might be the push I need to fill my life with better things.

Okay guys, I'm going to commit to it here. I've changed my signature to state my intention to keep off Youtube for the duration of time that I'm doing this 60 day challenge. I'm sure I've stated more times than anything how negative I consider Youtube to be on my life. It's definitely taken more from me than it's given.

If I break this challenge by watching Youtube myself, then I will edit my signature and state that I've broken it.

    Cheers for the support.

I have internet addiction, sugar addiction, and maybe noFap addiction too. I keep my internet usage healthy by using it to learn. Right now I am learning Spanish on DuoLingo, and taking part in the challenge forums.

Hello, I have the same problem. I binge-watch youtube frequently and also binge-surf the internet for diverse web sites. Most of the things I watch or read are scientific or cultural things which is ok, but the problem is I loose control of myself and enter into a trance state in which I stop thinking and the time just flies while i'm stuck in the "only one more video/ only one more article" mental program. Today I had a very bad episode of this, also last monday. I can't help feeling so angry at myself every time this happens.
I already use a webpage blocker for youtube, the problem is I can't block all the internet because I need it for my medical licence exam studies, and to plan the lectures I teach in high-school.
@SnakeAndApple great idea about the signature thing. I'll do it too

youtube itself is not harmful, how I abuse of it is the harmful thing. Many times I use it to deal with anxiety and I end up loosing control and watching one video after another for hours instead of fulfilling my responsibilities

  14. I think there’s a good point in reducing Youtube use (if not cutting it off altogether) especially at the beginning of a reboot.

As far as I understood, the physilogical mechanism behind both -youtube and porn addictions- is very similar. Both encompass this instant, never ending stream of novelty, to which our brains react with dopamine surges. As long as we’re clicking video after video (in either domains), our brains are bathing in a cocktail of neurochemicals, namely dopamine, which is the main culprit behind all addictions.

Even though youtube videos themselves are generally harmless compared to P, but the addictive effect of binging is going to leave our prefrontal cortex’ defenses quite low (aka willpower and motivation will drop), and so we will become more vulnerable to triggers (also youtube videos could eventually end up as triggers themselves, as one really doesn’t know on which kind of weird material they’ll land after a 6-hour binge, lol).

I am a Youtube addict, and I do recommend cutting it off the first months of a reboot (using Cold Turkey or other site-blocking apps), until you find yourself able to down-regulate its use to a certain, strict amount of time a day or a week. Might also go for all sorts of aimless internet surfing behaviors...

I found this video quite useful in explaining internet addiction in general:

Last night I ascertained something about how the addiction works in the brain. It has a lot to do with the search, I spent an hour searching through Netflix and adding series and movies, that i'm probably never gonna watch, to my list in a very compulsive way, without noticing the pass of the time. I felt the same as when I search for porn or youtube videos, only this time the trap I set to myself was Netflix.

Try to understand which type of videos you watched on YouTube then whenever your urges come first just try to distract them or search on exact needed articles on Google or books instead of YouTube ....read on long articles Google whichever you want access
