Is masturbation itself a problem?

Yes and I'm not saying it is easy to make the cravings go away because it's not.
But I do believe that there is stuff to do in this world that is more enjoyable than porn ( or drugs ) , and each person needs to find out what that is for them.

Well, our memories and our consciences all seem to indicate, I think, that we are not well-suited to approach reproduction and sexual pleasure after the manner of the rabbit or even after the manner of Ghengis Khan. Whatever you believe about the nature of the universe, our composition--by accident or design--is such that we form attachments and bonds of loyalty. Monogomy seems the best fit for those qualities, in my view.

 

Masturbation may not be a problem in the abstract, however, if it is compulsive,and if it centers around pornographic fantasies it can become a substitute for interacting sexually with other people and can hone your sexuality away from a relationship of any kind with other people and can heighten sex outside of any kind of human relationship, no matter how casual. If you have a problem of porn addiction, like me, masterbation often fantasies about transforming reality into the shapes that pornography distorts real sexuality and interaction into and makes me feel hostile to my wife or before I was married most women who were not into the increasingly insane pornographic fantasies and ideas I had on one hand and led me to increasing affairs or relationships with women who shared these fantasies or would act them out because they were unhealthy.
