It sounds like the author has some kind of ideological agenda regarding sex. Sounds like he's saying that the only reason people can have a problem with porn has to do with one's "values and ideals". When in fact it's his own "values and ideals" that he feels are being threatened by the challenge of porn addicts. It doesn't surprise me that academia would be resistant to anything that challenges a progressive, "sex-positive" agenda, and that that's why sex addiction isn't an officially recognized diagnosis. "Why people who believe in sex addiction must be socially backward, reactionary puritans". That's just my interpretation
Definitely ideological. Both David Ley and Nicole Prause have engaged in personal attacks of Alexander Rhodes on twitter: see these section of a very long page documenting Prause's and Ley's attacks and harassment of people and organizations that says porn can cause problem - Others - July, 2016: Prause & David Ley attack NoFap founder Alexander Rhodes Others - July, 2016: Prause & sock puppet "PornHelps" attack Alexander Rhodes, falsely claiming he faked porn-induced sexual problems
