There is a petition going around to shut down pornhub, due to the vast amount of rape and trafficking being profited from and supported by the site. I'm posting the link to the petition below. I know not everybody agrees with signing a petition like this, and may see it as "banning porn." But the thing is, I find it kind of crazy that an individual who is in possession of child porn would be arrested, but a company like PornHub that has absolutely no verification of the age or consent of the people in their videos, can be allowed to post whatever they want on their site without check. That seems wrong to me. This conversation is going around with YouTube at the moment, regarding how much the people running YouTube should be held responsible for the content on their site. To some degree, I believe they should be responsible. And they believe that too, which is why they have systems in place to monitor content and kick people off if they're breaking rules. Pornhub doesn't seem to have those same systems to protect victims. Regardless of how you feel about consenting adults performing porn, we are talking about minors and victims of rape, which pornhub seems to not be doing much to stop. You can read about this further on the petition. Sign if you like, or don't, it's up to you. I just saw this today and thought it would be relevant to share here. I recently read on BBC about a woman who was videoed while she was raped. The video ended up on Pornhub, and she had to take extraordinary measures to get it removed. Pornhub just wasn't interested. I have signed the petition, though I doubt that it will do any good. You really need to talk to your political representative (whichever country you live in).
Noble goal, but there nothing that can be done. Everyone knows they use minors and still no one touches them because they are powerful enough to avoid the law.
As others have implied - it's government regulation that would help here, nothing less. although considering where this petition is headed, with this administration it's a real catch 22 - on one hand it's a moral battle the religious right would like, on the other hand it's sleazy capitalism... so... although - yeah - if it wasn't aimed at only one site, it might be more effective...
Do petitions even work at all, especially when the petition is to the detriment of an extremely large company? I really don't see why this would accomplish anything. EDIT: Okay, I just read the entire petition and while I am thoroughly appalled, I still don't think it'll take down the site because me and over 60,000 people agree that site is evil, especially compared to the extremely high amounts of traffic it gets. Said systems are flawed since you can easily find porn on YouTube, unfortunately.
Well of course. They can't catch everything. But at least they're trying and have rules in place. I posted a video of a scene in a movie that depicted a rape of a minor -- no nudity or anything at all -- and it was IMMEDIATELY removed and I lost access to my entire account. I had to reach out and explain the situation for them to give me my account back. So, yeah. At least they're making some sort of attempt to care.
That depends on which country you're in. Here in the UK, many petitions lead to legal changes, even in the face of large companies. That's why the large companies don't like the EU — the EU takes a strong stance against unethical behaviour. Again, depends on the country. In most Western countries, it's nothing to do with religion (I guess that you're in the USA). If the public is against it, the politicians consider it a vote-winner. I didn't realise that. But YouTube does remove porn when it's notified. Try getting Pornhub to do that!
Tech companies have a responsibility to make sure that their products do not cause social harm. That's why most developed countries have consumer protection laws. I have no sympathy for Pornhub or YouTube... if they want to do business, they need to make sure that their products are not harming individuals either in production or consumption.
I'm pretty sure that if pornhub calls itself a "platform" and not a "publisher" they can get away with anything being on the site. I think they are still technically obligated to remove illegal content but they would likely complain that there is too much content posted constantly for them to filter it. Forcing users to provide proper age verification would definitely filter out a lot of illegal content though. Not entirely sure how proving consent would work. Maybe for every video you would have to provide a contract for a porn video signed by the "actors"? Well, its better than nothing, but don't get your hopes up. A class action lawsuit would mean a lot more than a petition.
Unfortunately, you can't prove it. But by allowing uploads only from validated accounts and explicitly saying that they will cooperate with the police in the event of material involving minors and non-consenting people, you will come close to eliminating such uploads. Alas, there's no way to prevent them from being uploaded to the dark web.
Signed. Wish it would go down but phub is only a part of mindgeek and all major p tubes are owned by mindgeek. Mindgeek is responsible for all the degeneracy
I knew that Porn Hub had questionable content, but I didn't know it was to this extent. I am glad to sign that petition. Porn Hub disgusts me even more now.
Until I started the NoFap journey, I had no idea of the depths to which the porn industry plumbs. They claim to be supplying a demand, but as with any addiction, they are complicit in creating the demand.
