Back in the 80s/90s people drank sodas all the time and ate fast food, but were still not fat. I remember as a young Marine in the early 90's in the morning for breakfast it was bacon, eggs, hash browns, cereal, whole milk; lunch was meat, potatoes, maybe fast food and soda too; dinner was similar.

Now fast forward to today, we got Wholefoods which in my opinion does not taste like good food at all and doesn't satisfy. It's like their sterile food is laced with formaldehyde and something just doesn't feel right after eating it. Also today, the push for health and fitness is so annoyingly in your face and yet Americans are fat as ever. I'm talking not just a little fat, but Jabba the Hut fat.

Fast forward to 3:45 and observe the physiques of the Marine recruits during that time; all of them were lean and mean. They were of different heights, but most all were lean guys. The Officers too, all were lean and mean. Seven years after this I attended Marine Corps boot camp but on the West Coast, in San Diego. Even in 1993, as a country I think America was still a lot leaner.

GMOs have only been present for 15-16 years in food.
Do you think there is a correlation?

I know that 1984 is about the time that the Soda companies switched completely to high fructose corn syrup since sugar prices skyrocketed. So that Marine Corps boot camp with Reagan's visit was only a couple of years into the switch. Haven't really looked into the GMO thing for any possible connection with obesity.

Everyone wants to give high fructose corn syrup shit, but the truth is it's like corn honey.
In moderate doses, even in food... It's fine.

HFC is in almost everything, ketchup, bread, processed foods, so moderation is out the window. No wonder people are blowing up like Jabba the Hut; I know that diet is only one part of it though.

Yes, high fructose corn, not necessarily corn syrup.
And also, if you want to know how bad a food is for you (sugar wise) compare the sugar to the carbs.
The bigger the spread of difference in those numbers, is a Huge indicator

Maybe the problem is not on the food but on the fact people on average move even less these days, with more desk jobs and walking less and less. Besides, PMO is not exactly a calorie burner either.

  9. The problem with obesity is caused by:
    • Energy expenditure. Calories in vs calories out.
    • People eating high amounts of two energy sources together which do not work together: fat and carbohydrates.

  10. Woah, really? What did they use before high fructose then? Cane sugar? And did Cola taste different?

And only 15-16 years, hmm, I'll have to look in to that one :emoji_expressionless:

Yup, cane sugar. Makes big difference. I can tell when im drinking hfc crap.

Thays why i only drink cane sugar sodas now. Thankfully, some of the brands are selling the real sugar options.

  12. Yeah, unfortunately they're hard to come by, I'm on the hunt for some Jones Cane Sugar Cola.

Who knew Weird Al would turn out to be a prophet..

I wonder how much of it involves factors people would not or cannot consider. As far as the two usual ones calories is one thing but of course there is not only one kind of empty calories, and that's just as far as diet goes. Although there's also a lot of hot new workout programs I wonder how much people are moving the rest of time, or they can't even park too far away from the entrance to the store and walk.

Some really far out stuff: Jack Kruse, a neurosurgeon who gets into quantum biology lost 133 lbs in 11 months using stuff like cold thermogenesis without exercising. I'm not sure how many people can follow his stuff though the weight loss part might be doable - though it doesn't answer the question of how we got here. But again the physics he lays out is far outside the scope of most peoples background though it may be of interest to some..

A little bit of food and a little bit of Mr. Lazy.

In the gym we have lots of fat boys and girls, the problem is they are not even trying, they do some shitty exercises for 1 week and then they disappear because apparently they didnt like the results.

  16. I think a big factor is technology . It changed our daily activities radically. We went from active recreation, like walking, and doing outdoor activities, to spending hours sitting on our asses and staring at a screen.

First the internet, then online/interactive gaming, followed by gaming and now mobile tech. We spend so much time on devices that it is frightening.

Add to that our willingness to treat minor injuries and illnesses with medication rather than trying to use physical therapy or augment our natural immune system. I can’t tell you how many people I see on those Rascal/Scooter things, the little “moving chairs” that are in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

It’s. literally like the movie Wall-E. We’re becoming lazy, overfed fatasses content to exist aimlessly while letting our minds be filled with useless entertainment.

I totally agree with this. I used to eat a lot last year and since then I decided to change my eating habits. No crash diet or any such nonsense, I decided to change my diet to something I could (and would want to, so no tasteless crap) eat the rest of my life. I also literally cut my portion size in half. I initially faced a lot of hunger, but soon I got used to it. And now I can't even eat that much any more. What I realised is that hunger is more psychological then physiological. It's in your head.

We live such sedentary lives nowadays that it makes no sense to eat as much as we do. But once you get used to it, it's hard to stop. But it's possible to change. I realised this after reading up on neuroplasticity. If you can push your mind away from porn, why not food, I thought. And it worked! I lost 20kg in 5 months!!

  18. Great workout for his bingo wings, his legs though? Not so much. Why is he even there? I don't understand why people even bother going to a gym only to be a lazy fanny. I admit that it's always a good show though. lol

  19. I believe the main culprit is sugar and easier than ever access to high calorie foods.

For example, you can find many fruits worth of sugar in one small glass of fruit juice. In fact, I checked Mott's orange juice nutritional facts, and there's 28 grams of sugar in one 8oz serving. That's 7 teaspoons (or 2,5 fruits worth) of sugar in one small glass. Many of us drinks glass of orange juice every morning, but very few of us eats 2,5 oranges every morning.
Add 2 slices of toast with nutella (2 tablespoons of nutella per slice of bread) to that, and you're eating added 11 teaspoons of sugar on that breakfast.

Think about it; in just 2 slices of bread with nutella and a small 8oz glass of orange juice you have consumed 18 teaspoons of sugar. First thing in the morning.
    Nice!

(For comparison, there's same amount of sugar in 8oz of orange juice than in 1 snickers bar ;) ).

A huge problem is also housing.
Went to a town meeting because a development is going in in my town and it's Huge.
    Buuuuutttt there is no yards...?
They literally defended this by saying "instead of playing outside, kids today play on tablets. They don't need yards, they need more house space for computer desks and things"
    What???
How is that supposed to help Anyone??
