Graduate students doing NoFap

    Hello warriors,

    I am on a 31 days streak today (so freakin proud of myself) and I am aiming hopefully towards the 90 days. It has been surely a tough journey but I am optimistic and I am trying to utilize the forums as much as I gain to get educated about my addiction.

    Any fellow warriors who happen to be graduate students and doing NoFap as well? How do you deal with the research stress and the never ending-loneliness. I feel sometimes that most of my deteriorated mood is caused by my addiction as well as the quite clear effect of grad school and all its bad traditions (supervisor communication, lack of motivation, lack of progress, etc.)

    Any advice how to address those feelings and ideas?

    Cheers

    I suffer from loneliness too. Try to find a new hobby. If you go long periods of time without introducing something new in your life, you'll get bored. Boredom can lead to depression and depression leads to masturbation. As for me, I got into vaping a few weeks ago. Whenever I get bored, I vape and it helps me avoid masturbation and pornography. Do something new that will occupy your time, as opposed to spending time alone with your phone and/or computer.

    Perhaps volunteer your time at an animal hospital/shelter. Get into gardening, play basketball with some kids on your street, meditate, read something that interests you, etc.

  3. I'm a graduate student and doing NoFap and I feel the same way as you. I can identify with what you said... it sucks to be stuck in that little hamster wheel graduate schools force us run in (or at least that's how I think of it sometimes). I've been having a pretty bad time with NoFap and other issues since school started but I try to spend time with people I care about when I have the time time to do so (almost all my friends live at least a few hours away from where I study). I really treasure those moments... even if all I'm doing is sitting down with one or two friends and having a beer. Being able to truly enjoy those few and far between moments has probably done wonders for me. Another thing I try to do is enjoy the little things when I'm able. These small things in life used to go by unnoticed by me but now when I hear a bird chirping in the morning or the traffic going home isn't as bad as usual I try to be grateful for these moments. Also, I think that if you have the time, doing what drac16 posted above could help. I feel like having a hobby you can do helps even if you're only doing it for a few minutes a day. Another thing I do is tell myself that graduate school will end eventually. It doesn't matter how much it sucks... I just need to keep putting one foot in front of the other and eventually it will all end. I don't know if that's the best way of thinking about this but it's worked for me so far.

    I hope that was helpful to you (or some other person who reads this).

    Returning to study at the ripe old age of 36 next week. I'm pretty nervous to be honest.

    Thank you all for your comments and for engaging in this thread.
    @drac16
    You are totally right. I am trying quite hard to get back to weight lifting (4-5 times per week) along with bouldering and football. For me sports has always been my sanctuary from all the noise that is happening. Nevertheless, I have to control my emotional state, especially when it comes to my research and its relation to my addiction. I had a streak of 36 days and I relapsed today, since basically I have been stuck with a problem in my research for a week now with zero output! I have to reflect more on the triggers and how to better handle such things in the future.

    @Tunasandwhich How much I miss my friends and my inner social circle. I am doing my graduate studies abroad and since I started my studies (2014), porn has been my companion... I hope I can find the strength deep within to tackle this addiction and harvest the energy to keep my focus on my studies. I have still 1.3 years to go and it feels I have been doing this for decades...

    @fredisthebes you can do it for sure. It just needs discipline and the rest is time..

    @MuscularSherlockHolmes It must have quite a journey you had to reach such a state. I would be more than interested to learn more about your experiences.
