Stop Calling it Your "Streak"

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by Deleted Account, Nov 5, 2020.

  1. Seriously...

Nothing annoys me more than hearing how people call it a "streak", that is a horrible way to look at this.

Porn and masturbation are addictions, you don't go on a streak for addictions, you quit them.
How stupid would it be to hear someone say "Well right now I'm on a two week streak of not smoking crack" or "I've got a one day streak of not drinking alcohol"?

I'm not a psychologist but I'd bet that just calling it a streak (which implies there is gonna be an end to it) already primes your mind into thinking it won't last.

This is a lifestyle change, not a competition measured in days, so treat it properly. I've been off porn and masturbation for ~140 days now and I don't even know the specific number, because I just don't care. I treat everything day by day. Instead of setting some huge lofty goal, just take everything day by day, and it'll be easier on yourself.

You will relapse, yes, that is just natural, but I promise you that once you have the proper mindset, you will have no desire to masturbate and you'll be disgusted by the idea of porn.

    Stay strong!

There’s a saying by Andre 3000 from OutKast that says “whatever floats your boat or finds your lost remote.” Meaning - to each their own.

I get what you are saying, but thinking of it as a streak is what actually got me to think of it as a habit, which got me thinking of it as a lifestyle. It’s part of getting used to thinking of it as a small challenge and then forever change.

Also interestingly enough my friend who was an alcoholic started getting better by thinking of it as a streak too and did say - "I've got (X) days of not drinking alcohol, I’m on a streak".

First message and you aggro everyone using the word streak. Nice start.
I will keep using the word streak, thank you.

And just saying "it's a mindset" really undermine the difficulty. Maybe it's easy for you, but for many I assure a mindset is not enough.

  5. Do whatever helps you along, I just see it as counterproductive. It wasn't easy for me. I used to masturbate 3+ times a day, and would look at porn all day long. It was hard at first, but I kept going, and my mindset is what helped me through.

@LickHitter Indeed, it’s the mind shift thing that really helps past the 60-90 day mark IMO. Regarding it being counterproductive and terminology aside, I agree with those who don’t do anything else than to focus on not PMO’ing. That’s not the key.

Do you have statistical data behind your claim? How about we start a survey to find out exactly how many need to see it as a streak and how many don't need it?

  8. I believe you are correct to a certain degree - it really is an addiction. And keeping count really helps some adddicts. Once addicts feel they have let go of their bad habits, that's usually when they stop counting, simply because it doesn't matter anymore.

You are incorrect. A winning streak is a continuous series of successes. It does not presuppose that it will conclude.

A streak does not necessarily mean it has an end. Also it gives a lot of motivation guys are on a long streak especially beginners. So when we start out we gotta to have streaks as they help us to approximate our progress. When u start to free yourself from the addiction such as 1-2 year long streaks then eventually u stop counting your days and forget all about the streak and it becomes your lifestyle. All people recovering from addictions like smoking or alcohol will count the days at least in the initial phases.
