Is he aware he has a problem?

 

It is sad when a family member has a blind spot that makes them engage in behaviors that to us are so plainly self-sabotaging and causing self-harm. However, it has been my experience that sometimes there are some special ways and channels in which people are receptive when attention to be drawn to their blind spot, but very often a direct confrontation of anyone's blind spot does not elicit the desired change in behavior; most often the direct approach provokes defensiveness and the person shuts down to further input. I know this because this is true of me, and I have observed it in my family members as well.

So I think an important question to ask yourself is 'Is he ready to hear from you about this, and do you have that kind of rapport and relationship where he is open to input from you and ready to make changes in his life based on that input?'
