All of us who were addicted to porn have one thing in common, our brains pre-frontal cortex has been shrunk and made less efficient than normal.
The pre-frontal cortex is the part of the brain that essentially makes us human, and where our willpower and judgement is exercised.
The limbic system is the part of the brain where basic survival and memories are formed, and this is where the sexual urges and drives come from.
By repeatedly viewing porn we strengthen the limbic system and sideline the pre-frontal cortex, which ends up being made smaller through lack of use.
During sleep our glial cells in our brain prune away unused synaptic connections between neurons and the result is our brain gets ruts and valleys compared to a normal brain. This is all caused by having too many pleasure hormones such as dopamine pumped into our brain due to porn watching.

This explains why we have such a hard time getting away from porn, the part of the brain, the pre-frontal cortex, which is where our willpower exists is actually eaten away, but will return to normal in time, as long as we stay true to no more porn.

So take heart fellow porn addicts, it is not a personal failing on your part that you get urges and sometimes fall back into the habit, your brain is physically damaged which makes avoidance even harder.
But take heart, all of this damage will be repaired and your brain will return to normal in time.
My personal recommendation is to take up a new hobby, or read masses of books, anything to exercise your higher brain functions and help it rebuild quicker.
Our brain is a living and growing organism, not a static statue which never changes, and it's only purpose is to make your life good and happy.

So keep a positive outlook, and if you fall, get up, dust yourself off and keep marching towards freedom.

Cheers and happy days to all.

Thank you for this. Question though - does this mean that most or all of the healing during abstinence takes place during sleep?

  4. I think so. One night I had problem with sleeping during the reboot. My brain was going through some much changes that I thought I was going to heal by tomorrow. That's when I realized how much a good sleep is very crucial for recovery.
