Yes, we delight in watching the suffering of the hero, we envy the hero on a certain level, but when the chance to become the hero and take on the suffering comes to us, we often abdicate it.

Maybe people know to some degree that they are not willing to do what it takes, to make the sacrifices.

Maybe that's why they enjoy watching it so much. They don't give up anything but vicariously bask in another's glory.

Maybe even bask in anothers suffering. You don't have to give up anything, you dont have to feel pain. But you can delude yourself into feeling self-righteous.
