My Situation

For Fapstronauts of the Catholic Christian Faith

    Hello Everyone!

I hope it is okay to start a new thread on here. If not, feel free to delete this.

I just wanted to say hello, introduce myself, and explain my situation. I feel that this would help me right now to get this off my chest and hopefully get some good feedback and encouragement.

As I said in my intro to NoFap, I'm a twenty-something engineering student and I am soon to graduate.

I'm not actually Roman Catholic yet. I hope to go through RCIA next year. I have been sincerely interested in joining for a few years now. The only thing that has stopped me is my family.

They are pretty much against it. I've talked with them, prayed with them, prayed on their behalf, gotten green scapulars and prayed the prayer daily, given them rosaries (which they accepted but never used), and done everything else I could think of.

My family is okay (or claims to be okay) with me attending mass and only hesitant with me going to adoration. I try to go to these as much as my current family dynamic allows. Hopefully I can go to adoration tomorrow. Maybe we could start an adoration reflection thread on here if you are into going to that as well.

I plan on joining next year because by then, I will hopefully be out on my own and have a good paying job to support myself. I can't move out now because I am still recovering from some health issues.

A big thing that drew me to the RCC was the idea of confession. The act of needing to go to a man who is a stand in for God made flesh to confess your screw ups seems like a great idea to me. It is biblical too but I feel that on a practical level this really works. I want to become the best I can be and to have a guy who you can talk to about when you screw up and offer help as to how to avoid doing those things again, seems infinitely helpful.

Like many of you in this group. I want to end my addiction to porn and stop masturbating. I also want to grow spiritually and physically.

I normally only pray my rosary about half the days in any given month and rarely do I pray the Chaplet of St. Michael. I am going to try to make these more frequent. Right now I am focusing on saying the rosary daily. In a week or two, I will add in the chaplet. I also need to cultivate some more courage to face my family and at least attend mass more often.

Also, I started counting calories the day I joined NoFap. 2000 cal/day. I haven't had success with restricting to 1200 in the past.

Sorry to ramble but thanks for reading if you managed to trudge through all that. Like I said, I am looking for any help, support, encouragement, or even constructive criticism you might be able to offer.

    Thanks!

    Hi friend!
So glad to hear of your nearness to the Church, I am a cradle Catholic who has been lukewarm most of my life due to this addiction, I'd love to keep current with you and commit to adoration and prayers. Keep seeking and asking God for his glory in your life and soul, He has loved you to this point and won't drop you!

Hi, and welcome, both to nofap and to the Church! You are an example to all of us already in the body of Christ, and I take strength from your post. Confession is a beautiful sacrament, and I pray you can be received next year as you plan. I have been an RCIA catechist for many years, and think it is so beautiful for adults to share their conversion with us.

I ramble, I'm tired, but send you welcome, love and blessings. Your sister in Christ, who offers you her prayers and encouragement, and begs yours in return xx

    Welcome @knighterrant!

You are defiantly in my prayers and offerings. Keep up with the rosary. It is one of the most powerful devotions the Church has in her treasury. There are many who do not understand the importance of staying close to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They think we're saying God isn't enough, but do not let those remarks fool you because God is enough and there is a difference between what He CAN do and what He has WILLED to do. That being said we are called to imitate Christ and we do this by taking the path He took and allowing ourselves to be instructed and raised by those He willed to be raised by so He could fulfill His mission which was the death on the Cross and the Resurrection. Stay close to Mary and Joseph. Ask them daily for prayerful assistance, protection, and support. To them you are just as important as Christ and it's because of their big hearts did He will to go through them.

As for your health problems, I am assuming these health problems are weight related? If so then you can PM me. I have struggled with weight for so long but have been making some amazing progress. Don't worry it's not a magic shake, fast, or pill. It will take work. You will need to keep doing your tracking.

Welcome brother! What's the objection that your family has?

From what I've seen, new converts who consistently increase in Faith, Hope and Charity, will somehow win over their family with their good example. It's not a quick process, but you can pray and hope that it will one day happen in your family.

Thanks for the welcome, encouragement, and support @Longinus and @DeProfundis ! I really appreciate it!

I can't tell you all the benefits I have experienced just from my somewhat inconsistent devotion to this devotion. I can only imagine how things would improve if I succeeded in doing it more often. I really enjoyed St Louis de Montfort's books also on Marian devotion and the rosary. Mary and Jesus have really helped me through some rough times over the past decade or so.

I haven't developed a relationship with Joseph though. I can see where he would intercede for people both in our position here on NoFap and in trying to grow closer to Jesus. I will try to include some intercessory prayers to him in my daily devotions.

    That was a beautiful line @Longinus .

Concerning my weight issues and health issues, the weight issues actually are a side effect of my health issues. A few years ago I was struck by a hit and run driver and suffered some injuries. One of the injuries led to some seizure activity and it seems that nearly everything that they use to treat brain related issues causes weight gain (except for Topamax lol). I am all up for suggestions on how to get rid of this weight though. I'll send you a PM sometime if that is okay.

@DeProfundis As far as I can tell, my extended family share some common misconceptions about the RCC, my father objects because he has ran into "too many bad Catholics", and my mother is hesitant because her grandfather was a Baptist preacher. I'm slowly trying to convince my extended family, and my parents to an extent, that the misconceptions are just misconceptions but I'm having a harder time with the other issues concerning my parents.

Thanks for the encouragement though. If I try my best and allow God to work through me so that I can grow in Faith, Hope, and Charity, it will be hard for my family to deny that this is the best path for me and hopefully them too.

All you can do is ask what questions they have and answer them. Baptist is a wide scope.

I am a convert myself. My dad also made a comment about bad Catholics. The response is simply that they aren’t living according to a Catholic teaching. Tell your dad if he wants to know the heart of the Catholic Church look to the Saints. There are plenty even in modern times.

As for your mom it is hard to turn away from the faith of your fathers. In fact it is a virtue to keep the faith of your fathers. It is keeping the fourth commandment. I don’t mean to say she shouldn’t convert. Of course she should. But I do mean to say there is something good in her motives.

I think the best thing you can do isn’t be a good example and pray. Learn as much as you can about the Faith so you can answer questions. Be gentle. Remember a prophet has no honor in his own hometown. Your family may convert, but when they do it typically, from what I hear, takes some time.

It is nice to read that you want to convert to RCC. For me on the other hand the confession is the hard thing in the church because I am very accurate I think I am too accurate and this is problem for me. Maybe if I had one priest to confess it would be easier for me. Anyway nice to see you here on this forum and in this group.

  12. Hello @knighterrant
What a beautiful story! In an age where young people are abandoning the church in droves, it is nice to hear about someone who is joining.
I hope you were able to go through RCIA. I went through RCIA myself, and now sponsor in RCIA. It is one of the best things in the world, I think, to get to be a part of welcoming people into the church and getting to help them along in their faith journey.
I hope you are in good health, and that you are able to join us once again on these forums:)
