Well drug addiction in the mid 1970s was part of the hedonism and excess in America at the time. But it is not a song about drug addiction.

Irrelevant to the facts of what the writers had in mind, sure. Other perspectives are still relevant to those that hold them, they are relevant to others who might gain something from their persepective.
