In his youth he was drawn to Manichaeism and later to neoplatonism. After his baptism and conversion to Christianity in 386, Augustine developed his own approach to philosophy and theology, accommodating a variety of methods and perspectives.

Augustine helped cement the false idea of a trinity into the minds of believers, over-emphasising by eisegesis certain writings of Paul after translation. Here truly began the invention and popularization of certain incomprehensible terminology such as consubstantial beings. The original tritheists and nontrinitarian denominations became further marginalized through this time in history. His thoughts were well documented as an historically important journey, but merely arrived at an incorrect conclusion in my view.

Why is Augustine important? He considered one of the fathers of Western Christianity and wrote some very important books such as The City of God and Confessions.

Wasn't St. Augustine a loyal papist and Bishop?

Saint Augustine of Hippo was a Roman African, early Christian theologian and philosopher from Numidia whose writings influenced the development of the Western Church and Western philosophy, and indirectly all of Western Christianity. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in North Africa and is viewed as one of the most important Latin Church Fathers of the Latin Church for his writings in the Patristic Period

Well Max, it would be my contention that Augustine had no concept of Papal supremacy. Even going so far as to rebuke Pope Zosimus for his unwillingness to condemn Pelagius and Coelestus. Zosimus claimed to have maturely examined the issue of the confession of Pelagius and Coelestus. He proclaimed them orthodox, and gave instructions to the North Africans based upon his self-proclaimed authority. Next, the North Africans rejected his instructions.

At age 17, Augustine fell in love with a woman whom he never named. Although Augustine largely downplays the relationship in the Confessions, explaining that he was infatuated with the idea of romantic love and had no control of his lustful desires, it seems clear he loved her deeply. Unfortunately, however, he felt he could not marry her because she was of a lower social class.............so he just had sex with her for years instead.

McMurtry, what!? That’s a story I’ve never heard. I had always known Augustine to have a very negative view of sexual desire. Could I get a source on that cause I gotta see this for myself

I wouldn’t think Augustine would be familiar with anything of the mass as it is practiced today

That wasn't the question at all? Let me try again. What type of liturgical worship do you think he lead as a Bishop of Hippo?

Well, in regards to communion, you would see the congregation taking both elements in the hand with a cup to share. Withholding the blood and communion on the tongue weren’t commonplace until around the 11th century when Eucharistic adoration began to explode in the western world. Hymns would have primarily circled around the psalter. And the elders of the church (presbyters) would have oversaw it all. As a bishop, Augustine would have been the head honcho over his congregation(s).

Full of bitter sorrow, Augustine flung himself out into the garden and cried out to God, "How long more, O Lord? Why does not this hour put an end to my sins?" Just then he heard a child singing, "Take up and read!"

Thinking that God intended him to hear those words, he picked up the book of the Letters of St. Paul, and read the first passage his gaze fell on. It was just what Augustine needed, for in it, St. Paul says to put away all impurity and to live in imitation of Jesus. That did it! From then on, Augustine began a new life.
