I am giving up PM because I want to enjoy sex more with my wife. I haven't really understood the benefit of going O free too but see lots of people doing it and recommending it. Can somebody please explain the benefits and why you would consider it?

Yes it's about healing your dick and your brain but also improving your impulse control overall.

If you have a serious PMO addiction, then you should consider hard mode. If you don't have a serious addiction and you just want to enjoy sex more, then you don't need to do it. You only need to go O-free if you are seriously addicted to PMO. This is because your brain has been rewired from P and even O during sex can slow down the healing process. If PMO has made regular sex unenjoyable or impossible for you then you should do at least 90 days of hard mode. Depending on how long you've been addicted and how young you first started PMO'ing it could take several months to a year to fully recover. You may want to consider hard mode even if you are not seriously addicted to PMO so you can heal the fastest. If your wife isn't fond of the idea of long periods of abstinence then don't do hard mode.

I'd say one of the biggest disadvantages I had doing just PM mode (while still having sex with my wife) was the chaser effect. The urges definitely went up after having an O with my wife. That's something to consider.

Thanks that was really helpful. I'm not sure if I have a serious addiction. I used to watch a lot of porn but watch a lot less now like once a week. I still see this as a failure though as really I want to cut it out of my life completely. I also go on non porn sites (like stories or looking at fashion models) for MO as I tell myself this is not porn but am probably kidding myself. It has recently dawned on me that the only way to give up P (and related stuff) is to give up M also. I will try giving up PM first and see how this works out and see about giving up O sometime later if I feel it might help. I think my wife would be understanding about it if I talked to her about it.

I second what @TheLoneDanger had to say. I personally think that abstaining from sex is unnecessary, but the chaser effect is not to be taken lightly. It does greatly increase the desire for orgasm, so if you're dealing even with mild temptations to return to porn, it might be advisable to abstain from sex for a period. This is especially true during the days before she's to begin her monthly cycle, or the day before you're to leave for a business trip or something of the sort.

I assume you have talked to your wife about your problem/addiction, right? If not, do that as soon as possible. And if you are considering hard mode, be sure she is in on the deal. But I agree with you. Giving up M has been a key component in recovering from my addiction to P.

The chaser effect is awful and just amplifies if you relapse
