Good evening everyone Today I went to a psychologist and talked to him about my problem about porn and masturbation and I told him that it was a waste of time and that I had lost attraction to the opposite sex I think he thinks porn is normal in adolescence At the end of the session, he prescribed an antidepressant called seroxat. I looked for this drug in Wikipedia and found several side effects such as: Sexual dysfunction Suicide dry mouth nausea etc.. I am afraid to take medicine and I want your advice
Agreed with @Anonymous86 . They don't know anything and just give antidepressants. I was also there. It doesn't fix anything. And they have thousands of side effects. Edit: Oh I didn't notice you posted outside the group
I'm taking Seroxat daily from January 2018. It's known for affecting sexual function. Actually most antidepressants have negative impact on sexuality, but Seroxat causes sexual dysfunction probably more often than others. I can't say much about this, because I don't live any sexual live and my libido is almost non-existant. But overall this drug was fine for me, I have tried few others in the past and I can say I tolerated this one the best and it's side effects were the weakest. Also Seroxat is well known for it's severe withdrawals, so you need to discontinue it very gradually. If you need my advice, I suggest you to consult another specialist before starting to take antidepressants. Having few opinions is always better than having just one.
No one here is qualified to tell you whether to take an antidepressant or not. If I can give you any advice as someone who has been on multiple antidepressants it is to take your time and do your research before you begin taking anything. You may even wish to get a second opinion from your doctor or another psychiatrist. For me it was very easy to see taking a pill every day as an immediate fix. Please just do your research on dosage, effects and side effects. Also remember that if you do decide to take them you can always just give them a try and that it does not have to be forever.
I tried an SSRI for about a year and decided it wasn't for me. I like to feel my emotions and I also like having a libido.
I have a problem with antidepressants because when you know the mechanisms behind them you realize that they are unable to target specific parts of the brain that's why they "spill" all over your brain causing all sorts of short and long term side effects. Plus they're effective for only 30-40 % of global population. If Aspirin had such low efficiency rate, it would be long gone by now. I'd advice you to start practicing an hour of vigorous aerobic exercise on daily basis for 3 months and if that doesn't make you feel better you can still try taking antidepressants. I've suffered from major clinical depression from my teen years. I got i diagnosed with chronical depression disorder and social anxiety caused by long lasting childhood trauma (lived through wartimes as a child) in my twenties and no psychiatrist could cure my deep sadness and negative outlook on the world. Luckily I came across Dr. Stephen Ilardi's book 6-Step Program to Beat Depression Without Drugs. I read his book (you can find pdf online for free just google it) contacted him and started to implement the program in my daily life. A year later I can say this program has helped me way more than all the doctors, drugs and therapies combined. Here is the description of the program in my journal -> Aug 8, 2018 and link to the original program http://tlc.ku.edu/elements Also if you'd like to educate yourself on how depression and antidepressants actually effect your brains (not the brainwashing you get from "common knowledge") listen to the Stanford Professor Robert Sapolsky on the topic. You will be shocked about some facts on antidepressants that are not well known. Also listen to the lecture of neuroscientist and brain surgeon why exercise is the best pill you can take against anxiety and depression Tuesday at 4:59 PM BUT Stay away from SSRIs, anxiolytics and similar shit, if you don't suffer from clinical depression or/and anxiety. You don't need drugs to stop excessive MB and/or P watching. There is zero studies showing that antidepressants or anxiolytics help curing addictive compulsive behaviors. There is even some evidence that excessive dopamine in certain parts of the brains can trigger compulsive behaviors.
I would strongly advise seeing a few doctors before going the antidepressant route. I have beaten a severe cocaine addiction (nearly six years clean). During my journey I was suggested antidepressants many times. Thank god I didn't touch them. PMO can be beaten without taking anything. It's just like all other addictions. Do not just jump on the antidepressant train . Doctors prescribe them like aspirin now. See more doctors try new hobbies change habits work on improving yourself. It's the only way to manage addictions one day at a time.
I don't know whether antidepressants are any good for you or not. It does sound like the psychologist is completely missing what you need. I recently went to see a psychiatric nurse practitioner about porn addiction. Some healthcare professionals are aware of the harmful effects of addiction and will actually try to help.
