    Hey guys,

I an in my early 30s, have PMOd from 13 to 27 regularly. After severe symptoms of chronic anxiety, depression, low energy for many years, I started searching the web why I felt like this and somehow stumbled on nofap. I am very thankful for the info i found here back in 2015, which improved my quality of life considerably.

Anywhoo, started nofap in late 2015 and the past 5 years have been a very tough but joyful recovery, filled with a-ha moments but also despair.

I stopped watching porn completely and practiced semen retention as well, even if I had gf in the meantime. I ejaculated maybe max 10 times a year. Depression was gone, energy levels were back up and anxiety was lower but it was STILL there, and it was VERY annoying because I have contamination ocd and this is how anxiety manifests for me. I was quite dissapointed that semen retention could not cure me of this shit that my mind was producing until 2 weeks ago when I noticed that I was doing something wrong.

I noticed that everytime i received a picture or a video of sexy girls or short funny porn videos or gifs from friends on group chats, i would feel a rush of dopamine in my brain and then for the next few hours I would be filled with anxiety. It was very interesting so I decided to try and see what happens: I deleted Instagram and facebook and anytime my friends would send a picture or video i would just scroll past it and not watch it or look at it. At the same time i quit coffee the same day i started doing that. Guess what? After almost 2 weeks, i feel much more calmer and in control. Where I used to feel my brain being anxious (inside, behind the eyes in the middle of it), i no longer do as much. I feel like it’s cementing now and i am unable to be anxious. Yesterday i looked at a video with some girls in bathing suits and guess what: my brain started feeling anxious right after. I feel like I am that Eureka moment! Needed to share with those guys that are like me, doing nofap for so long but not doing it right. Cut that shit out completely! No pictures, no instagram, nothing!

from what I understanding anxiety is a resukt of an imbalance between dopamine and serotonin, so if you have more dooamine than serotonin, you will get anxious. Porn and sexy pics trigger dopamine in my brain and throw the balance off, thus the anxiety. My plan now is to go for as long as possible with no porn related dopamine triggers at all, and become the superman i always dreamed to be.

Great advice on this post man! I've actually been trying this and seeing how beneficial it is to my NoFap journey. Not seeing pictures in social media or anywhere else helped a lot with reducing my urges and anxiety.

Also good luck on your journey! I'm confident that you will be able to reach your goal man!

Thanks bud I really appreciate it! At first, I thought that looking at pictures was just a ‘lead-to’ and as long as I don’t look at porn afterwards and can control myself, it’s fine. But then anxiety reduced but was not going completely away and I still have bouts of it which was annoying and disappointing. And then I realized how just looking at a picture of sexy girl in a bathing suit or naked will trigger first dopamine then anxiety in my whole body. I guess years of porn abuse made my brain that sensitive to it.

Good luck to you too as well, how is your journey going? Are you anxiety free?

  5. Thanks for sharing this singular advice.
I had same experiences and came up to your view around triggers. I though i can handle any trigger i confront but the fact was that all these little deviations make The Big Difference.
Again thanks for reminding and i hope your triumph.

Exactly dude! I was dumbfounded when i tested it, watching my reaction in the brain and the whole body after only looking at a picture! And the anxiety stays for hours/days sometimes. Crazy! Are you completely anxiety free now?

Thanks man! My journey is going pretty well so far!
And to answer your question, yes. Not looking at any stimulants (sexually provocative pictures of girls on phone, pc, tv) has really helped my mind to stay on track on other things, and has also made it easier for me to talk more articulately to others. I'm guessing that this is because my mind isn't dirty.
I'm also doing way better than to my previous run, as I remember that one day I had seen a picture of an instagram model on my pc on about day 10 and couldn't take it or the sexual thoughts off my mind, which made the next 10 days until I relapsed like hell. So just to reiterate, it's best to not use social media during nofap.

That’s great to hear! What were your symptoms before finding nofap?

  9. Well...to clarify that a person is completely out of anxiety is a waste of time, It is unlikely to elude the pain whether you PMOing, watching triggers or none of them, each one has it's own devil but the last one certainly will strengthen one's mind to ignore trashy thoughts.

Today I got really close to relapsing I had the tabs open and I was fishing like crazy, all of that started because I did not show as my SUPERMAN a couple of days ago, I saw scantily clad women on a YouTube video and it triggered my addict mentality, and since then I have been sub-consciously using that as an excuse to fish for pornography, even though the guilt creeps up on me, I will try my best to rid out the rationalization with the clear stream of reason.

Before NoFap, I had these symptoms (and wasn't even aware of most of them):
    • Lack of initiative/motivation - I couldn't bring myself to do anything productive/accomplish any big goals
    • Lack of interest in girls - since my brain thought that the images on the computer were real, I thought I was satisfied and didn't need a girlfriend (may have been caused by psychological and/or physical effects from frequent PMOing)
    • Severe/mild social anxiety - since my mind was so focused on the sexual imagery and tired from fapping, I couldn't bring myself to talk to people properly/articulately; especially the case with girls because my brain didn't see them as people from all the porn that I'd been consuming
    • Hostility - I remember that every time after I finished PMOing, I would yell angrily at my family over the smallest of inconveniences (they didn't know about my addiction and had never really talked to me about sex since it isn't something that is usually done in my family for some reason, which only made masturbation more secretive and damaging)
    • Depression - despite the illusion, I guess I still somehow knew that this was not the right path to be taking in life, wasting my time, energy and life force away by viewing disgusting things, which made me depressed and, combined with other factors, made me never look forward to anything good in life (until now that I'm on NoFap)
    • Lack of energy/mental clarity - again, as previously mentioned, masturbating wasted my energy and life force away, making me feel horribly exhausted in most days and not be able to focus on work, which not even good sleep could fix
These are just a few of the many other horrible things that porn and masturbation have done to my life, which I'm now on the track of fixing. Hope this answers your question.

Totally, i can definitely identify with your experiences! I always felt there was something missing and never realized that i was regularly spilling it away. Never understood how some of my friends could be so agressive.

how long have you been on this journey and how would you rate your improvements in all those areas?

I've been on NoFap for about a year now when I learned how detrimental PMOing can become and decided to take a new grip on life. The first few months I saw little to no success and kept constantly relapsing (1 week was my max). However, in the second half of the year is when I started picking up steam with the days of NoFap (28 days max) and the benefits that I discovered (including some healing in most of these areas that I had trouble with). I've become less anxious, less depressed, gained a clearer mind, lost weight, and accomplished other great things this year, which I would've never been capable of had it not been for NoFap. Of course, I'm far from fully healed, but I've definitely seen improvements in these areas that will definitely grow as I continue on.
Hopefully in the upcoming year, once I return to school, things will be even better, as I've learned to deal with a lot of the issues that were particularly present in there.

Hope this answers your question man.
P.S. if there's anything else you wanna talk about to not clog up the thread, feel free to send me a direct message via the forum.

Hey guys, I have noticed something else: wheat was giving me anxiety and OCD. After trial en erroring a lot, I have eliminated bread, pasta, croissants, anything that is made of wheat, and guess what: the anxiety is fading. I’ll keep you posted. Nofap gave me back my energy and wittiness but didn’t rid me of this annoying anxiety/ocd, which I had no idea it was caused by my diet. I have removed coffee, sugars and wheat completely. Let’s see what happens going forward!
