Do urges get worse before they get better?

My AP and I have been comparing our experiences as we try our best to abstain from p&m. We've been experiencing a lot of urges to look at porn on the web and also to masturbate. It's gotten worse over the last few weeks than it was when we started. At the same time, we're both dreading the flatline period we've heard about.

What has been your experience? Do the urges to look at porn and masturbate get worse before they go down? It would give us some peace of mind to know this is common.

It depends on the person, for me it came in short intense waves of desire but it passed fast. I will tell you though once you do this for months at a time, they go WAY down

Don't dread the flatlines. Lean into them. They'll help you see more clearly.

  4. There were times that I dreaded the flat line phase and I never stayed long enough to witness it. I am reading that flat line is a good sign and also an opportunity to progress because I read that in most cases urges tend to go way down the longer you abstain. Also in most cases, it will get to the point where you can actually have control over them and not the other way around. However, this will be hard at first but as long as we can deal with the flat line positively then we can overcome our desires (according to the majority of posts I have read here). Today is day 1 for me (Wed 17/05) and I am looking forward to the flat line. So good luck to you and your AP as well as everyone here on the same struggle :)

Some days are better than others.

Personally, these last few days have been trying though.

I think it's a bit like that for everyone else. You just have to keep fighting.

In flatline, what you have to fight is the panic from no urges, from all interest. We tend to think that we are broken and want to see if we can beat a dead horse and bring it back to life. Of course we can, but as soon as we do, we are back to day zero on our reboot.
We want to heal, and to get there, we have to stay strong and avoid resetting. Flatline gives you a chance to go back to before you were so driven by sex. It gives you the opportunity start over clean and do it right this time.
A lot is riding on this, don't wipe out on a random wave or later on a calm sea.

In my case urges will always be urges but what grew in time was my resilience to not fall for them, i get urges sometimes but im much more calm even when the urge maintain it's intensity...in time the urges became less frequent so nowadays is pretty weird to feel that pressure. Because of personal shit i've been having urges in the last 3 days but im rock solid and in the moment i felt more shaky i came in here and posted about it and all my doubts vanished.

    Stay strong!

7 days is my best so far. I find the urges come and go but if I'm alone and I start thinking about porn the urges get intense. At this point the games already lost just by thinking about it, I usually then convince myself to do it. The rush is incredible at this point and I find myself relapsing. I did find it easier to control the more I would abstain. Yes I've only been a week at most but I feel that the urges do become less. It's just the trick of trying to distract yourself and not set yourself up for failure.

So, you never flatline? I guess it is possible. I'm glad that the urges are getting weaker, and that you are doing so well at controlling them.

I agree with this. The bad news is urges are always there, it's not going to get better. The good news your control over the urges can get better

Thanks everyone for your responses. It's so incredibly helpful to hear about your experiences and know that my AP and I are not alone. Although everyone's experience is different, there are some patterns.

flatline is some sort of depression and i try to do everyday rituals to fight that:
-i say 3 mantras in from of my open window every morning
-i started reading the bible in this no rewire process and it's being really helpful
-i try to post frequently or at least when i identify some crisis is trying to take over

Usually before flatline you feel energized from the libido stacking up in your body, use this energy to develop new hobbies...all this helps to get smaller flatlines or maybe non of it.

I recommend you all of these habits i've adopted, and in the bible case, if you are not christian then try meditating or something that can bring inner peace.

    Keep strong brothers

Something which isnt staying the same must get worse before it gets better. Otherwise it would be getting better before it gets better which would just mean it is getting better.

So with apologies for being pedantic, yes. It will get worse before it gets better.

I think there's alot of negative stigma towards flatlines, they're actually pretty awesome. It kinda feels like your numb to everyone & everything (Fear, anxiety, peoples opinions). I think the key is to just embrace it without trying to be charismatic or upbeat & invest the majority of your time on self improvement.

The irony is when you surrender & start acting as bored as you feel, you stop censoring yourself as much & people start to find your chill + honest vibe attractive. The urges will still be there but if your dominating your path in life you get so into the grind you barely notice.

For me flatline is a bit like when I had hepatitis. My numbers were through the roof, and my doctor sent me to bed for a month. When he saw my disappointment, he told me I could come back for a blood test in two weeks. For two weeks I laid there and let my body heal in peace. I had just started grad school, but I had no interest and no energy for anything, not even music, and I did not push it. In two weeks, my blood scores were nearly normal; my doctor told me that I needed to give thanks and begin walking daily.
I think we need quiet time in flatline for our mind to heal and return to more of its pre-porn state. I knew someone else who had hepatitis about the same age and time that I did. He stayed in bed, but he tried to keep reading and studying. After he ruined a semester and showed no improvement, his friends took his books and told him to quit pushing it, just relax, and get well. He was up and going in about a month. There are times to push until you feel the burn, and there are times to relax and heal. (Ecclesiastes 3)
I chose to see flatline as a peace God gives us.

Urges might get worse, they might get HUGE. But one thing is for sure. They will go away after couple hours.
