Last Sunday our local head Catholic Priest mentioned how porn ruins lives. The priests have spoken about this a lot, as they must get a lot of confessions about it. This particular priest was head of admissions at a major Ivy League college.

On the last Sunday gospel reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_5:29
    https://biblehub.com/matthew/5-29.htm

Matthew 5:17-37 was the actual reading but he cut out the more judgmental parts of the passage.

He made a good point; God is not our enemy, does not want His creation ruined. We are all created for a good use, as such sin is a major obstacle.

  2. That doesn't sound like a good way to preach the word. You shouldn't cut out the things you don't like. That would concern me if my pastor was doing that.

Kyrie eleison! and drac16 like this.
  3. Absolutely. The older I get, the more experience I have, the more and more I see that God's commands for us are all out if kindness, to help us. Oftentimes it sounds like a threat, like He's saying "don't do this, or I'll hurt you!" But really what he's saying is "don't do this, because the natural consequences of that is that you will be harmed." It's like a parent telling their kids not to touch the stove or they'll get hurt. They're not saying "if you touch that stove, I'll be angry and I'll hurt you for disobeying me." They're saying the stove is hot, and it will hurt to touch, so you probably shouldn't do that.

I've noticed this before, asked him about it once, he exercises pastor privilege, I don't know other priests who do that.

"Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God".

If we read and apply the Gospel and the rest of the Bible we will be benefited like it was medicine.

  5. I have no idea what this means. I've never heard of such a thing. That sounds even more concerning. The Bible doesn't give any pastor the "privilige" to cut out bits of the Word that they don't want to talk about.

    Agreed

Our deacon read the whole Gospel & gave a great homily. I don't think we should omit anything from the suggested Gospel readings, especially when that particular one dealt with how marrying a divorced woman is adultery.

Or it's pastoral arrogance. I have reported a local priest before to the diocese; frankly many of them are somewhat out of control with various extremes that I don't really see as Biblical. This one said his job was to get everyone in the congregation into heaven which no man can possibly do.

After a while I get tired of reporting bad behavior that shouldn't be tolerated. But the priests set themselves on a pretty high pedestal.

I go to the Catholic church because I like the traditional music and church forms. I guess if I want sound preaching I would need to go into the city to Times Square church or Brooklyn Tabernacle.

  8. Well, if you're talking Catholicism, then don't get me started. Lol I could go on and on about how messed up and unbiblical things are.

Yeah, they do. Catholicism also teaches some pretty dang weird stuff about the Pope and the Catholic teachings having more authority than the Bible itself, which is messed up. They also have a different set of 10 commandments than what's in the Bible. Honestly, the more I learn about Catholicism, the less I accept it. I would say to do some research if you want to make sure you're actually being taught what's in the Bible.

    Here's a good start:

Sound teaching should be the primary reason to go to church. If a church doesn't have sound teaching, the rest is worthless. Traditions and songs don't really mean anything if they aren't teaching the Word of God properly, in my opinion.

Actually many of the Catholic theologians and teachers have been sounder in what matters, the core Sermon on the Mount teachings, how we treat the least of our brethren, the needy and hurting. They do a lot more of that than the other denominations. Anti war teachings are integral to many of the Catholic teachers. Catholicism has some of the best universities.

On the Protestant side we have considerable pride and arrogance; false teachings on compulsory tithing when it is clear that is not a New Testament teaching; little popes which we see in "Pray TV". If you look at the early church fathers the early church was nothing like what we have in most protestant denominations.

And we are a nation of many cults, political, new age and religious cults that deprive people of so much. Scientology, JWs, SDAs Mormons, LaRouchies, etc..

For a long time the leaders of the Reformation and their followers saw the Papacy as the whore of Babylon, but it isn't.

Crass Materialism is the closest thing to the Whore of Bablylon as we see in Revelation. "The whore that sittest on many waters" that commits fornication with the kings of the earth. Pornography is one feature of crass materialism, with the human trafficking, incredible abuse, isolation of those supporting it, etc..
