I have heard about using controlled but slightly uncomfortable situations to help develop a stronger willpower and be able to endure greater discomfort in the future. Does anyone have any ideas for how to do that?

The cold shower challenge is one such vehicle for this - helpful videos are on YouTube. Other ideas are to force yourself to speak up in uncertain or uncomfortable situations - like if your boss is asking for volunteers for a task that might not be too appealing, speak up and volunteer - you then can build endurance with an extra task or chore you could have otherwise been lazily free of (that's the point - too much laziness in life is self-defeating), and you actually build points as a good employee - helping your career. Which is how such challenges can improve life overall. If you take an extra step in being a good friend, then you build up such character all the more. If you take an extra step in being good neighbor or citizen (like, make the effort to pick up that trash on the ground), then you build up character overall. It's when you make no efforts that you settle into a comatose malaise of not being able to find any energy to do or accomplish anything, never mind trying to find victory over an addiction. When you shut life and opportunities out, then life begins to shut you out. The challenge is to choose life and opportunities often. Random acts of kindness are another vehicle for extending yourself.
