Everywhere I look it seems like the general prescribed cure for lonliness, isolation, depression, etc. is getting a hobby.

The only issue in this prescription being, I was hooked on porn, then on social media at the same time, now on videogames. On a daily basis I can't find the will or dedicate the energy to doing something as simple as reading a book.

Its fascinating how my relationship with videogames is becoming so similar to my relationship with porn. It makes my mood worse, markedly, but at the same time its like I compulsively go to play a video game whenever I have a spare moment.

With a hobby you will have something to show for your time and effort. I have a few paintings at the halfway stage that I never finish because I lack the discipline to do something when I don't feel like it. If, on those nights when I felt tired, if I had just added a simple layer to a painting instead of being demoralized on the computer, what would the effects be?

Would there not be a improvement in one's stride if in their heart they knew that they didn't spend the entirety of their spare time wasting away? I really think there would be.

In job interviews they almost always ask about hobbies.

How hard can it really be to open a book (even if it isn't all that captivating), touch up a painting (even if you don't care for the subject anymore), or go shoot some hoops (even though your body is a little tired)? Just do it!

Just do it indeed, I totally agree, however if you do feel stuck sometimes, like you've got a boatload of good ideas for hobbies but just can't quite bring yourself to do them instead of the easy thing after a long day of work or w/e, I think finding some accountability is essential.

I've hired a personal trainer to help with my olympic lifts in the past, and just knowing that I had that training session later on that week would provide the extra bit of motivation necessary to get to the gym earlier in the week and put in the work so as to show up right for my trainer.

My next venture is going to be hiring a guitar teacher. I love playing, and have the tabs app on the tele, but when I'm tired at the end of the day, I will watch tv instead of grab the guitar right next to it if I don't have a bit of external motivation.

I know this typa stuff is spendy, but really there are independent folks out there offering their services for great prices if you're willing to research, and for me, it doesn't take much- just having a teacher to be accountable to for an hour session every two weeks will dramatically improve how much I practice the hobby in my own time.

Anyway, food for thought, good on yeh for exploring hobbies, they are definitely an acute cure for urges and for mental/emotional bs, as well as isolation, especially when they involve others

  3. I used this method for years.
And did all kind of things.
But I learnt that I need to align my acts with my "inner flow" if I want to be able to continue.
Often we do something while the inner flow goes another direction.

If you know what I mean.

I don’t quite get what you mean but doing what aligns with your current energy makes sense.

Nah, I'm a custodian/maintenance and groundskeeper lol, going back to school for biology, and all-around trying to get my shit together after a decade or so of fucking off; thus the enthusiasm for trainers, coaches, and accountability, etc.
