How do you not become too hypofocused on quitting PMO so that you don't end up guilting and shaming yourself; therefore leading to another relapse?

Have other goals in life and a lot of stuff to do. When you are busy you won't be thinking about PMO

I think looking through the success stories and seeing the pattern of how not focusing on pmo actually helps to not pmo would help. It seems like you're already aware trying to resist pmo is still thinking about pmo so that's good. I think the thing is, whether you're 5 minutes clean or 5 years clean you're a non-user. I know that sounds weird, because if you regularly use something you're logically a user. But there's power in identifying as a user, and its usually not helpful and only leads to shame and putting yourself in a box where you expect yourself to use. The main difference between you and someone who has gone a while without pmo is time and undoing certain patterns. It's really just a matter of time, so try to have something bigger in life that you're going for. I don't mean overwhelm yourself with a huge ambitious goal, but just something with meaning. You won't be able to distract yourself or keep yourself busy all the time, everyone has to sleep or get a bit bored eventually. But if you have something so important in your life porn becomes non-negotiable and is seen as something that takes you away from this, it'll help.

Focus on other things, I guess. Shift your focus to your hobbies, work, whatever. Keep yourself busy. Possibly attend therapy. I assume that relapse is inevitable. I mean, I know literally no one who managed to quit for good; but it's up to you how you handle it. Being addicted is just some aspect of your persona. You can be addicted and wholesome at the same time.

  5. Hypo means too low as in hypothermia when you lose body temperature and get too cold so hyperfocused (hyper - high) would probably be more accurate. Another word for it is obsessed. It's definitely not healthy to replace a pornography obsession with an obsession with not using pornography. Like others have said it's all about having other things to do instead of porn and only worrying out one day at a time. After all you can't do tomorrow before you've done today. I think of it as more of a change to my mindset and the way I like to live my life rather than something I can't afford to slip up on or must do at all costs. Any single day I do is good and if there's a number of consecutive single days that's even better. Sometimes I don't even bother counting them.
