I realise in writing this that it is simply not possible to block all P sites on the web, simply by using text lists, but currently my blocking on my Mac is done using Cold Turkey. It works by blocking individual URLs. I have already setup lists of 1000's of sites, but wondering if anyone has a list even more comprehensive? Or a source for a site that would contain such lists? I am using an older version of the OSX so some of the more modern software alternatives won't be compatible, so currently looking to try and improve the blocking powers of Cold Turkey if possible Thanks all
Hey man, I have this list, it's still not enough, but more or less cover the major sites you can encounter, if avoiding digging deeper.
@Jmexsan - thanks man. I think i've got this off you at a good time. A few weeks earlier and my brain probably would have said "ooh look at all those new exciting sites I haven't tried yet" Feeling empowered now that I will be able to block and NOT browse!
I know this is quite late, but I've made a list for 597 nsfw subreddits, courtesy of that one master list copypasta, if anyone would like to add them to their Cold Turkey blocker or other applicable program.
Hi! Thanks for sharing this. I'm brand new to Cold Turkey and reddit has been my biggest weakness for porn. I had just blocked reddit in general, but it's frustrating I had to go to that length just for porn. How do I use this list? Sorry, I'm completely new! Are you able to break it down for me?
Hey @Samakin, you have to download the Cold Turkey Blocker. There's a section inside that is called Blocks. Click "add a new block". Then on "Import" and "Websites from file". Then you can safe the block and it will block those sites. Good luck.
I find the best way to use Cold Turkey is instead of making a block list, make a "white list" instead.
This has been my experience as well, especially because long lists slow the computer. I do wonder if there are better ways than long lists or whitelists. It would be swell if porn sites would include a keyword like "porn" in their metadata so that they could be easily identified by software.
You mean, you want Cold Turkey to stop you when you are deliberately search for porn sites, or when you are casually surfing the web?
Both I suppose, but basically some better and more efficient way to block sites. For example, if I could block all web videos except those on YouTube, Vimeo, and Facebook that would be wonderful. I suppose the most basic thing for a url-based blocker like Cold Turkey would be some good wildcard blocks, such as "*fuck*" (block any page with a url that includes the word "fuck"), or blocks on what I can use search engines to search for (e.g. "*?*=*porn*"). Maybe that would be a good start, and would circumvent the problem of importing files with thousands of urls. Whitelisting works well for me, but there are always times when I need to remove the blanket block since the whitelist is always too limited. But for now whitelisting is the best approach I've found.
Sorry if I'm misunderstanding but you can do that already. Just go on your block, click import, select "all URLs containing" and type whatever word you want.
Oh, sure. I didn't realize there was a shortcut for that. But it isn't quite right. For example, his code for searches won't work for Yahoo, Yandex, etc. I am working on some keyword blocks with better search restrictions, but if anyone has examples they should feel free to share.
I use a VPN called CleanBrowsing on all my devices which you can filter out most porn websites with. I use it on top of the SPIN browser for additional prevention. And then I just use Cold Turkey Blocker on my PC and Lock Me Out app on my phone to block any websites that escape the filters. That way I don't need to do a whitelist and can still use the websites I need without blocking the entire internet.
I have found a way to 1) block the ability to search for porn, and 2) block the porn websites I have memorized. The second goal is easy. To accomplish the first I have a Cold Turkey block that forces SafeSearch on Google, Bing, and Yahoo, but focuses primarily on Google (see attached). All other search engines are blocked. (The "google.*/*tbs=sbi*" block is for 'search by image', which seems to bypass SafeSearch.)
You can use ColdTurkey to block keywords or text within a URL, such as 'reddit', or 'anime'. I don't have a list for you but this proves an effective tool for me. Might be worth a try in the mean time
SafeSearch stuff doesn't work for me on Windows 10.....I checked the URLs generated with SafeSearch on for each of Yahoo, Google and Bing and they don't feature the identification markers you have set up????
