What do you guys think about minimalism ? I have been a minimalist for as long as I can remember, even though I haven't always lived as one. I always had the feeling of owning too much, had the urge to minimise my belongings. Nowadays I think that minimalism is almost another addiction after porn I have to take care of. But still, its a good method to keep life organised better, as you don't have as much to worry about. Often I change my mind about things, one day I want to buy a PS4, even though I had one a few years ago and sold it to keep it simple, the other day I decide to spend my day in doing productive things. I feel like, being a minimalist contrasts my other interests rather often. Do you have similar experiences ?

  2. How so, exactly?

I would consider myself a minimalist, and I love it. To me, a large part of being a minimalist is being conscious of what you own and what you consume/purchase, and only owning/consuming/purchasing the things that are either useful to you or bring you joy.

I'm constantly decluttering and purging things. I had a massive yard sale last summer, and even though I haven't bought all that many new things since then, I'm having another rather large sale soon, because I've found that a lot of things I kept the first time around, I haven't even used since then.

Another aspect of minimalism I really like is the idea of focusing on access rather than ownership. Like for example, I've gotten rid of almost all of my books, aside from the ones that I know I really love and will read multiple more times. I still have some that I haven't read yet, but once I do, I'll probably get rid of them too. I can probably find most of them at the library if I really want to read them again.

Same with movies... nowadays it just doesn't make sense to own movies that you're not sure if you'll ever watch again, when it's so cheap and easy to just rent them on Amazon or something. So many things are so accessible these days it's kind of insane. So the need to own things for yourself has gone down a lot. It also encourages community, because if you don't own some tool or a formal outfit for a one time event or something, instead of just going out and buying one, you can borrow it from a friend.

So yeah, I love minimalism. Lol do you listen to The Minimalists on YouTube? I love them. Joshua Fields-Millburn is a big inspiration to me in writing, as well.

I don't listen to the minimalist podcast yet, neither do I follow them on yt, but I loved the movie on Netflix :). About the contrast in my life, I always wan't to buy things I don't really need. I change my mind then and cancel my amazon order for example very often. I think I'm not really sure who I am or who I want to be in life. Same goes with my smartphone, I want it to be as simple as possible, so I only use 2 apps, but sometimes I decide to install more apps, for example for running and a few hours later I think, "Well, I can run without those apps", and remove them again. This kind of thing happens to me a lot. I probably want to be a minimalist as extreme as possible, thats why I even keep things I like away from me. I stopped using a PC, I do everything on my smartphone, no TV, just a few clothes, only a few selected products in the bathroom and so on. But I often want to buy new stuff, for example a drone, which is unnessessary and would lead me to install new apps too. Also I don't want to spend too much money on things, I like having money for good food and for activities with my girlfriend.

Ummm.. I've got stacks of shite across 2 different States of the country.. lots of stuff.. (like 12 cars for instance) I'd love to minimise one day (I've never had any apps on tablets or phones ever.. they're only tools to me imo), but plenty of toys, tools, gear and bloke stuff! (I've never gone without, and believe you always live within your means)
Each to their own, hopefully I'll be able to shed the sh*t and be a minimalist too one day.
    Enjoy :)

  5. Well, balance is always important. I'm a minimalist and I think about my purchases a lot, but I don't deny myself the things I really want and will get use out of or joy from just for the sake of not having as much stuff. Some people employ the one in, one out rule, where if you buy one thing, you have to get rid of something else. Maybe that would help. It also helps to make sure you actually really want that new thing, if you're willing to get rid of something else to buy it.

I think like everything else, balance is helpful. And everything has a good and a bad side.... yin and yang. For one person, they might embrace minimalism because they don't feel worthy of having things. For another, they might just not have desire for those things. It might be different for everyone. In general, I don't have much attachment to "stuff", but I'm not opposed to having it. I'm not a fan of labels and feel like we all have our needs and issues as well.
