I'm rebooting; it's been three weeks so far and I'm down for the June free challenge, just signed up.
I'm thinking talking to my partner about my porn addiction is an important step in the recovery process and might help me stay committed to the reboot, but wondering how to broach the topic.
Any accounts of success in this matter would be appreciated as I need some encouragement! And encouragement from my partner would help a lot too; I'm just worried about hurting him even more than I already have...

Being honest about your struggle with those closest to you is a very smart move on your part. It's not an easy thing to do but once you do it the weight that comes off of your shoulders is very liberating and will give you a great deal of momentum to carry you forward and will provide accountability to keep you on track. As long as you keep your addiction a secret, even if you're 3 weeks into recovery at this point, you haven't fully healed. I think it will help that you have this 3 weeks under your belt to tell your partner how serious you are about this and that you're committed to recovery. They may be upset at first but ultimately they can't fault you for being honest about something that you're struggling with if they truly care about you. This addiction is almost impossible to beat alone...I could never have made it to this point without my wife's support. I wasn't brave enough to face her an tell her about my struggle and she had to discover the betrayal herself, which only deepened the wounds and made it harder to rebuild trust. If you don't have someone close to you to hold you accountable, you will eventually relapse. This addiction is not easy to beat alone. I hope you'll open up to your partner and take this pivotal step in your recovery. It is definitely the right thing to do. One last piece of advice...state the facts about your addiction, be honest, don't sugar coat or make excuses. Don't tiptoe around the details. Tell your partner how long this has been going on, how frequently, what you think the underlying cause is, and what you're doing now to recover. If your partner gets upset, do not get defensive (this is incredibly difficult but you have to support them initially for them to recover from the pain and start supporting you). You can do this...keep fighting ;)

Thanks, Fighter. You've inspired me to go ahead and face my fear with important aspects to consider and discuss with my partner. Can't thank you enough.

  8. You're taking one of the biggest steps towards recovery. Now don't hold yourself back in anyway, but be 100% honest with yourself, and your partner. Good luck buddy. ;););)

Being open and honest with your partner will not hurt him. He may not like it, but it is no attack on him, on who he is, or on what he has done. It is about you, and what you need to heal. If he cares about you, he will support you through your reboot, and enjoy a better you after you heal.

For sure one of the best and toughest things to do. Opening up to my wife on this controlled me for 20 years was very hard for both of us, I really saw how bad it was for her but at the same time by being vulnerable she understood and has been supporting me since then. Good Luck!
