For the past 2 months I've been really strong about not eating like shit and not playing video games but I still used PMO. I saw the benefits but I felt like shit and couldn't even act on them. I was just covering up the bad feeling resisting my other habits caused with PMO. I feel like this is the path I should be on, I knew before that porn was by far the worst habit I was doing but thought kicking the other stuff would make it easier... I don't think it did.

When did the increased self control you get from nofap really motivate you to change a bad habit in your life? What was the habit? Did you go cold turkey or work on it over time? How difficult did you find it?

I quit smoking while using PMO and I found it easy. It took me two attempts and I've been smoke free for 8 months you still get a slight urge now and then but I'd have to be really on another planet to ever act on one of them. More recently I cut out sugar totally and once it got to two week mark it got to my head and I gave in.

I unintentionally prepared myself for challenges like tackling porn about one year ago by practicing intermittent fasting and taking exclusively cold showers. Before porn I took care of another very bad habit that I've been annoying myself with I think even longer than I've been watching porn. And that is nibbling and picking on the skin around my finger nails. Just as pointless as porn ... Probably even more pointless ... But just as hard to come by. I've stopped doing that now for about two months. I'm still performing related minor self-hurting habits, but it's much less.

The shit in my brain is all kind of related and keeping and maintaining a healthy mental spirit is for everybody a lifetime challenge ... It's a life style to sort out immature behavior and thought patterns.

Once I realized the damages that all my bad habits (PMO and smoking) caused me that's when I decided to quit... All at once. Cold turkey. I never relapsed since that day. The key was I successfully convinced myself that I had to quit, no ifs and buts, I just did. It was hard at first but my ego and self discipline grew day by day. Reason was, I did everything as if my life depends on it.

@xStraightEdgex: Yeah I quit smoking while using PMO and it wasn't so bad looking bad the physical cravings didn't bother me at all at least.

Something I realized with the other bad habits I do though (video games, junk food) is I don't actually know how bad they are cause if that makes sense. I'm always using PMO and those habits only get out of control when I feel so bad from using PMO.

@magicplayer123abc Then I suggest rather than quitting junk foods and video games REPLACE them with healthier habits such as exercise and healthy eating. Have a fitness goal or whatever. You should strengthen and reinforce this new habit loop you're developing by PERSISTENCE and REPETITION. I hope I answered your question. Namaste! :)

  7. Yeah same here eating like shit, no exercise. And I actually can't hold the line on pmo if I am a slob with the rest of my life.
Other things are: too much caffeine too much Netflix too much social media... And not enough making music.
In all these cases I take a shortcut to a reward that hurts me rather putting the little effort to do something that really makes me feel good.
I believe in cold turkey (except with caffeine where I taper down) but yeah I fail get up improve a little etc

I've experienced both the constructive effects of more self-control, but also using alternative reward mechanisms to replace some bad habits. For example, I noticed that when I quit drinking alcohol almost two months ago, I rewarded myself by keeping more candy and sweet energy drinks around the house. When a craving to indulge myself kicked in, rather than going to booze I would eat candy. So not entirely a healthy habit, but I rationalize it by saying I'm trading up. Kind of like my own nicotine patch to deal with the deeply ingrained urges.

I'm trying to cut down on social media, I believe that this is not only a trigger for PMO but also a ridiculous waste of time. Need to try replace it with real social time instead, which ofcourse takes more time and is harder to do, but in the long run probably better for me.

  10. you are crushing it. When I decided I needed real friends I got serious. I picked some guys around me that had things in there life. Had vitality energy strength and I hunted them. I chased them pursued them. It's not easy in our society to make new friends. We are so busy with so many un important things. Hunt healthy people and dump your story all of it. Piece by piece don't let healthy strong full people escape. Treat them like you are a hungry starving person and they are a big juicy steak. Then hunt them chase them invite them don't take no. Real vital life giving friendships are worth any effort. Well Don't get thrown in jail or anything like that. But all folks like to be chased any way. Go gettem.

I've bought a bucketload of gum and started using that to replace nail biting. Also, I'm a compulsive spitter when I'm outside, so I'm cutting that out because it's unattractive.
