Do you guys think music helps suppress urges?

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by Deleted Account, Jun 14, 2020.

  1. I've been trying to experiment this over the course of the last couple of days.
Has worked partially, mostly when I listened to slower-paced music.

Hey man. Listening to music is part of my plan to fight urges. You must have a plan to be able to fight urges as they appear- always stay prepared. Whenever I'm aware of an urge (extremely important to have awareness of what's going on in the mind), I pop in motivational music. I then meditate while listening to the music. Finally, I come on here for motivation.

I wanted to share that with you because it's very important to always stay ready when an urge hits. Anyways, music is great. I like to listen to stuff that motivates me to keep fighting. However, music is only a small percentage of what I do each day to fight this addiction. There's many other things (meditation, cold showers, education yourself on what pmo does to the brain, developing a skill(s)) that help beat this addiction more than listening to music IMO.

I also listen to music youtube.com and it helped me a lot. However, you might want to pick the ones that will help you in the long run and not the ones will hinder your progress. Don't watch the music video version instead watch just the lyrics part. The reason why because to avoid sexual stimulation about psubs.

  4. Yes, I am using music to beat urges too. I literally just saved myself from relapsing just now by listening to music on youtube. It is a huge help to take myself out of the sexual thinking mindset.

I agree that music is only a small part of the fight. I have made a list of triggers to avoid, things that caused me to relapse in the past and another list of things that kills triggers. Lift weights, cold shower, music, running, getting up early. Will be different for everyone but good to know what helps you through experimentation. I had not thought of listening to music until I looked at my list this morning. A bit off topic, but another thing that helped me was that I wrote a letter to myself after a heavy relapse describing in detail how I felt about myself in that moment and also physically. How I missed the horny energy that I am feeling now and how it is preferable to the depressed state PMO leaves me. This could help you control the urges too.

Good advice here. I will add that maybe even sexually explicit lyrics should be avoided just in case too. The songs I listen to personally usually are upbeat happy type of songs.

  5. If you guys are interested, I asked this question because I was listening to an online radio via the website radio.garden.

The radio is called "Alpha Boys' School Radio" from Kingston, Jamaica. Great stuff, I highly recommend it.
