I recently decided, or re-realized (I made that word up) that the key to my success is a pure thought life. Seems obvious but sometimes I don’t get the obvious.

I was reading a daily study plan on Thought Life when 1 Peter 5:8 was mentioned. I loved the verse and wrote it down in my journal.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
    ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The next day I was doing a different study by a different author. I got hit with 1 Peter 5:8 again.

Today I was listing to a Podcast and bam: 1 Peter 5:8. The author further explained that many people run from hard times and difficulties but God expects us to fight the devil with the full armor of God. And we get “armored up” by immersing ourselves in the word. Don’t let yourself be devoured by the devil.

I am committing myself to daily Bible time and to keep my mind sober & free from lustful thoughts.

    Wow that is no coincidence!

"There is no such thing as a coincidence. A coincidence is simply a small miracle, in which God chose to remain anonymous."

My wife pointed out something I found disconcerting. I concentrated on the first part of the verse. She pointed out that perhaps the second part is God telling me how vitally important this message is. Is it a life or death situation? Death of my relationship? Death in finances? I don’t know, but any option doesn’t sound good. But it definitely has my attention.

Sounds like there is some fear in your motivation (...which I think is a good thing.)

Is it wrong to use fear as motivation to quit porn?

No. Most ANY reason to quit porn is a good reason. As long as we get to the finish line.

I think God gave us the power to fear some things for a good reason (eg - I'm afraid to touch that poisonous snake).

  6. Fear is a good motivator to get us away from something harmful to us. But love is the only motivation that will last to draw us toward something good that we lack (esp. if our lives are otherwise "good"). Fear plays its limited role, but love will (and must!) endure. May our love for the Lord never falter! We know his love for us never will. :)

Excellent point. It is like a team playing to win or playing not to lose. The first goal is motivational the second is not nearly so. I have also read that is not a good idea to meditate too specifically on the evils of porn. Our human frailty makes us too susceptible. What began as a exercise to convince ourselves why porn is bad can easily turn into a temptation to relapse. Much better to meditate on the serenity, peace and love that comes from a close relationship with the Father.

  8. I think for me it's the only way I will be able to get through as well. I am so bored and alone so much, I end up online and just floating all over the toxic web, the only thing that will get me through and away from porn plus toxic media and websites is to be a full-fledged Christian and immerse myself in communication with God daily. I am so scared that I will fall back into porn and other toxic websites and I don't want to.

I think this is a wise choice that you are making. The popular media is focused on making money and manipulating opinions by leveraging our basest desires. Finding in yourself the strength to resist what these people are selling and focus on God's love instead will lead to your continued success. Great work! Keep it up!

I like this thread because I often feel God is talking to me, particularly when the thought which enters my mind causes me to look at my actions and my thoughts in a different way. While praying after Holy Communion last Sunday, I asked the Lord to heal me of all of the damage I have done to my heart through sin and to give me a clean heart. Not long afterwards, I was given the thought that Christ will immediately give me a clean heart just as soon as I truly want it. It made me see that I haven't completely rid myself of corporeal desires and I need to battle on even harder in this regard.
