Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age

  1. I mean it's good that atleast they took the first step and parents don't need to worry why the 10 year old Andy is spending too much time in the bathroom lately.
There may be be loopholes but yes it may prevent vast majority of children falling into this thing unknowingly and destroying their childhoods.
Yes that's true though most people still don't take this thing seriously but yes there is a slight change in people's attitude towards Porn recently which is good. I also stumbled upon this article yesterday.

So yes there is a hope and who knows the society changes it's views on Porn soon.:)

Fully censoring pornography would take an unimaginable amount of funding, time, and compliance with private companies/governments. This is a good step that can save many peoples' emotional well-being (for decades)... but ultimately, combatting the porn industry takes more education than censorship.

I was wondering about Reddit. Some filters don't recognize that Reddit has porn on it. I was listening to a podcast where this person said technology is far ahead of governments and legislation. He wasn't even talking about porn but virtual reality and the metaverse.

Sure, but when should kids be educated about porn? When they are 4 years old? Some have access to a digital device at that age... [IMG] I think kids should be educated about porn in first or second grade of secondary education (12-13 years old); I was educated about smoking, alcohol and drugs at that age. However, currently most kids first come into contact with porn before that age, contrary to smoking, alcohol or drugs. Requiring age verification on porn sites would do a lot against this problem, I think. Kids aren't on Twitter and Reddit, anyway. They're on Instagram and Tiktok, which don't have porn, as far as I know.

Agree it's good, but also agree education is probably where the best changes can be made.

It's true kids are getting devices earlier and using them for many hours each day on average. I can't remember the stats, but it's a lot.

I would say if you started educating parents first it would help. Say when kids are 8-10. Each year for parents night give them the statistics for age of porn exposure, and describe to them what the contents of the front page of major porn sites consist of (acts and titles). Many parents have no clue...

That should be enough to motivate the good parents to look out for their kid's internet use from then on.

That would be good, indeed. My father first told me about porn and masturbation when I turned 12. From the distant way in which I reacted, he concluded that I didn't know what to think of it, porn and masturbation being very far from me. Quite the contrary, I reacted that way because I was already acquainted with what he introduced to me, and I didn't want to show it... [IMG]

It's good that they're going to do that, but as others have said, they can find it in many other places. Instagram, Twitter and Twitch can be far more damaging because of the interaction and constant content from their favourite creators. You don't always need porn if you're obsessing over a girl who is interacting with you and giving you constant stimulation. It's a far deeper problem than just having access to dirty videos.

Same I remember being more concerned about folks knowing I knew about it. It's probably something we'll generally suck at as a society until there's warnings everywhere like smoking?

The Western world promotes degenerating values. It's time to turn around or else this whole civilization of ours will collapse. Porn should be banned now!

This would definitely help me too. Google started doing age checks on YouTube some time ago, which is weird, as I'm pretty sure that they know I'm over 18. I'm glad for it, though, because there's no reason for me to watch age-restricted videos on YouTube, and I'm definitely not going to submit a photo of my ID card for them to check, as that takes a few days anyway, and while I am relapsing I know that I'll regret it before my age gets verified. As with the previous two times the UK Government tried to bring this in, it'll get watered down, or ditched.

The key is education, not banning things. It'll be easy to get around the blocks/verifications, and once the younger generations' curiosity is peaked, they'll be hooked again, with no discipline on how to handle it.

It's part of a much wider problem in society. 'I can't handle it, so ban it,' rather than educating and the much tougher path of self discipline. I know it won't be a popular view, but if you ban porn, then it starts leading to other things that should be banned too i.e. violence in movies, TV shows, video games, but it's amazing how many people stop short of wanting that.

They aren't banning it though, as long as you can prove your age then you are free to watch. It's essentially the virtual equivalent of alcohol and cigarettes.

Banning was a poor choice of word on my part. It won't happen IMO, and if it does, it'll take about 30 seconds to bypass, like the Youtube age verification.

GO BANNING! BANNING 4 EVER BOYS !!!

If you ban, kids won't get hooked in the first place. You won't miss something you've never seen.

Yeah but you can't effectively ban porn. Or anything really, drugs have been illegal for decades but its still very easy to get them

So what about sex scenes in TV shows and movies? Or provocative music videos on Youtube? This will stimulate the mind and get them to search for more, which will take less than a minute to bypass.

For me, the YouTube age verification is a big deal. And I am already addicted. I think this will be useful mostly to protect those who are not. Those under 18 especially.

But that's the thing, it's a barrier that's so easy to bypass in a minute.

When one of the heads of a children's charity here in the UK was told about VPN's and apps to download to bypass verification on Youtube, and they can be used on porn sites in the future, she didn't have a clue. It'll be a reason why it won't work, and will be ditched just like in their previous two attempts. Kids at school are learning basic coding in IT lessons now. They're more savvy than any of us on here.

And it won't stop those U18 watching TV shows like Game of Thrones, jerking off to those sex scenes, and exploring further. There were already media reports here of children watching Squid Game on Netflix (violence, not sex, but violence still affects their minds).
