In all fairness, there were many ancient schools of Christianity that didn't believe in hell. Hell itself is actually a perversion of Hel which is a Germanic pagan term for the grave or the afterlife of average people. Vallhalla is only for heros who die in battle chosen by Odin after Freya takes the heroes she wants. Anyway, there was no term that meant Hell used in the original writings of the Bible, the idea of Hell comes from writings about a "Lake of Fire" which does exist in the Bible but you could argue is metaphorical. Like I said, early Christians mostly didn't believe in Hell and many of them took the "Lake of Fire" as a metaphor and believe people would be let out of it after repentance and be allowed into heaven. It really makes one wonder how much of Christianity comes from Zoroastrianism, because that is roughly what Zoroastrians believed. Also, the "wise men from the east" in the Christmas story are clearly Zoroastrian Magi.

Hell probably got to be big because Christianity became a political tool after it's adoption as the official religion of Rome. The idea of a torturous afterlife existed in pagan religions but wasn't for people who believed or disbelieved in any specific god, which makes a lot less sense for polytheists, and was instead for people who were dishonorable and shitty during their lives, once religion came to be used as a political tool though, the idea of eternal torture was easy to apply to political rivals or dissidents, or enemies of the state, so boom! Hell is for disbelievers and disbelievers are people who do not follow the official state religion.

I believe Hell is not a a torture chamber as much as a state totally seperated from God, where there is no love. Noah's ark was probably metaphorical, although there is evidence that there was a significant flood in that are at about that time, I read somewhere.
