Science: Testosterone During Abstinence

I originally came to this website after watching a video (1) by the YouTube channel What I've Learned. I was most interested when a study (2) was presented showing the testosterone levels increasing after seven days of non-PMO.

7+day+without+sex+or+masturbation

I'm astonished by just how much testosterone increases after day 5, peaking at nearly a 150% on day 7. Granted, this study only followed ten men (mean age of 26), so its results are limited by its sample size, yet it seems to have been performed thoroughly.

Just in case we needed a reminder, the effects of testosterone on the brain help boost social confidence and willpower, along with boosting one's desire to "get shit done". I presume this is an evolutionary trait as nature would drive men to seek out mates for procreation, especially pre-civilization. So by committing to at least a 7-day fap fast, you boost your testosterone to its highest potential.

But the peculiar part of this chart is the shift after day 7, showing a similar negative curve as the spike before it. The results of the study are a bit strange, seeing such a sudden boost and drop, but what I am curious of is what comes next. The study suggest 3 weeks were observed, but I've only been able to find this single chart comparing testosterone change to days abstained. I wonder if T-levels drop negative at any point, and if there would be another spike, say at 14 days. Maybe there's some chronobiology involved suggesting that humans only naturally seek to mate once a week. The science of abstinence is unfortunately vague--and I hope NoFap inspires future research--but there must be some process regulating testosterone when abstinent for longer periods. This is new research for me, so any enlightening ideas or different studies would be greatly appreciated in expanding our knowledge on the subject.

My initial take from this was that PMO-ing only once every seven days would create a cycle optimizing testosterone levels. However, upon further contemplation, even on the final days, testosterone was still up 25-35%, perhaps the increase persist, and, comparable to daily PMO, still resulting in a net boost of T-levels. Another note is that testosterone drastically peaks on the later days, which may or may not be desirable, and resetting the cycle with PMO, as well, may or may not be desirable. If you couldn't tell already, there's a lot we don't know about abstinence as it is seldom studied and is rarely practiced outside of religions. Maybe if I can gather the resources, I could do a personal case study showing my results from prolonged abstinence.

Anyways, I'm just a nerd for new science and self-improvement. I'm also new to this NoFap community, so feedback and links to other related articles would be great in learning more about the science behind all this.

Hey there!

There has been very few Studies and Research on Porn and Testosterone. The Scientific world is really divided when its about non substance Addiction, but it is true that this Spike is fascinating. But you have to keep in mind that from the little we know, nothing has really pointed at Abstinence having a great impact on Testosterone besides that intruiging spike. The Dopamine and Addiction research is far more cohesive and extensive and you will find many good sources and studies linking Porn and Heavy masturbation to related problems (Since online Porn is more or less nothing but a Sub Category of Internet Addiction). So while doing NoFap will have a positive impact on you it will not change your testosterone in a meaningful way. Having up to 40 % Testosterone fluctuations is normal aswell.

Even the Hotspot of NoFap itself has made clear that all research is pointing towards no corrolation: https://www.yourbrainonporn.com/book/export/html/148

There is more space for Research and as Neuroscience progresses, so does our understanding of Mental Behaviours on Testosterone, but as it stands right now, there is no reason to assume it will impact you, even if the r/nofap reddit still has it in their FAQ.

And honestly, it doesn't matter. The Dopamine problem and addiction in general is way more extensive and the ultimate cause of Porn and Masturbation problems, there are a shit ton of ways to increase your Testosterone, so it may be better to focus on the real positives of doing NoFap.

Also, lets be honest, what would be the point in increasing Testosterone and Abstinence if it would all vanish during sex? One of the many reasons many people want T is to be confident and find partners.

Have a great day

I think we have tended to equate testosterone with virility and vice-versa. There are other ways to make us feel confident and full of energy that will ultimately make us feel like healthy men.

The interesting thing to test would be how testosterone is affected in extreme serial masturbators. I recently got my T-value tested and it was around 12. This is low for my age group. Average for my age is 20-21.

Measuring T over a few weeks is not relevant. I would like to now how consistent overmasturbation ( multiple times a day over years) affects T-levels. This is where it gets interesting. Is there any research? I've never seen anything.

I guess I went a little heavy on discussing testosterone, and didn't mention dopamine as much. At all really. What I'm interested in is not testosterone as it relates to virtility and sex-drive, but how it can be utilized as kind of a nootropic hormone. While the research is still absent on T levels, the dopamine release relating to orgasm is not. As you guys pointed out, dopamine is responsible for porn addiction, equally as it is responsible for any other drug addiction. Perhaps another plus of no PMO is reducing a dopamine source, which, the less overloaded your brain is with sources of dopamine, the more pleasureable it is when it is experienced. I'm certain most of us have developed at least a little tolerance to that "orgasm buzz".

Anyways, thank for sharing your thought everyone and contributing to the discussion. We're all still figuring some of this out.

I'd say the main reason for the post-week dropoff is simply the body's "feedback-inhibition" mechanisms telling it to quiet down on the testosterone production.

Psychologically speaking, kind of like a "deadline" for all that extra testosterone to show something for its efforts.

See, while testosterone is usually categorized as an "anabolic" hormone, its effects --- more energy, libido, faster metabolism, get-up-and-go, less lethargy, etc... --- can actually be considered quite "catabolic-like" (perhaps, "catabolism-inviting") as well . So, it actually makes sense that the body would naturally have some feedback mechanism to inhibit testosterone production -- even if the temporary period of abstinence that caused it to originally rise did not eventually result in successful mating (or orgasm).

Wonderful post! I like that although we have few or not academic studies, we as a community, are discovering on our own as a large population. It would be exciting for some proud nofappers to get PhDs by studying those of us on nofap.

I'm hoping my testosterone will increase. Been having mood swings, but currently in flatline so feel a bit passive. I've started boxing with a bunch of tough dudes (i'm a skinny artistic type) as wanting to boost my 'masculine energy' more.

That's very exciting! I've always enjoyed boxing. I don't have a gym so I just hit the bags on my own time. I will be starting a boxing class soon at my university rec center.

It sounds like you've got yourself a great challenge. Take your time and fight yourself. Fight yourself to become better and focus on building great technique. It's nice you've got people go challenge you too. It can be a lot of fun if you're not getting an absolute a** whooping!

I haven't been beaten to a pulp yet...! So hopefully going back again soon. Pretty exhausting though!!!
