Want to stop sex trafficking QUIT PORN

Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world, with over 30 million people estimated people to be enslaved, according to UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons. According to some estimates, most trafficking involves sexual exploitation.


Especially during National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, understanding how porn increases demand for victims is part of the key in decreasing a multi-billion dollar problem.

“You don’t know what the status of these girls are. They could be being coerced, they could be children and we don’t know they’re children,” said Sgt. Wade Williams with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. Williams works in the Special Crimes Bureau-Exploitation Section, which focuses on human trafficking and internet crimes against children.
Some of them want to be Jenna Jameson — they want to be professional porn stars, and they are doing it willingly, and they have an agent. But certainly, there’s an underbelly of that in the porn world…,” he said.

The consumption of porn in an increasingly sexualized culture has been linked to an increase in the human trafficking industry because victims of trafficking are often used in the making of pornography, according to a study from the Journal of Counselor Practice.

“Those taking part in watching porn, which they believe is something passive and private in their own home, do not know the background of the performers and are not educated on the very fact that many are being coerced or forced to act out these sexual scenes,” said Julie Franklin, chief operating officer of the Shelter for Abused Women & Children in Naples.

Franklin said many trafficked into the porn industry have been sexually assaulted since they were young children, which makes them more vulnerable and easily preyed on by predators.

“[People watching porn] might not realize that they are creating and fueling a major demand on the sex industry, and it is only putting more and more vulnerable individuals at risk of being the next to fall victim to this crime, of which many have no idea it has even happened to them until it is too late,” she said.

There have been countless examples in the media over the last decade. In Sunrise, Fla. in 2020, theSun- Sentinel reported on a 15-year-old girl who was discovered to be in 58 adult videos including on sites like Pornhub, Periscope, Modelhub and Snapchat. She had been missing for a year and was finally able to return home after her mother spotted her in sexually explicit videos and alerted the authorities.

Another example is of a 14-year-old who had more than 400,000 people view her brutal attack and rape on Pornhub. The girl begged and pleaded with Pornhub to take her videos down after much humiliation, but they only complied when she emailed them pretending to be a lawyer, BBC reported.

Many examples of porn made without consent — like the stories mentioned above — are chronicled on Trafficking hub’s petition website. The petition has more than 2 million signatures in favor of shutting down Pornhub and holding its “executives accountable for aiding in trafficking.”

In 2019, there were 42 billion visits to Pornhub alone. The company reported an 11.6% increase in March of 2020 due to people spending more time at home. And Pornhub is only one of many popular websites for viewing pornography.That’s a lot of eyes watching potential victims of human trafficking unknowingly.

“Despite there being many adult film actors who are consenting and fairly paid, the danger is that there is no way for the viewer to know who did and did not fully and openly consent, therefore consumption of any online pornography is fueling the sex trafficking industry,” according to a study by The Ohio State University Pressbook.
