Where's the research about rebooting?

Although there are naysayers, we see an overwhelming amount of research, especially neuroscience research, about porn use as an addiction. Much of it is helpfully collated by Gary Wilson on his Your Brain on Porn site. (N.B. @farmerjones gave a great summary of this in his two posts here and here).

But where are the studies on the efficacy of rebooting?

There seem so many obvious questions that could be answered with research, for example
    • Is rebooting effective?
    • What is the proportion of men who have successfully completed a reboot who remain porn-free a year later?
    • What is the impact of the choice of mode, i.e. how much quicker or more effective is hard mode compared to normal mode?
    • What impact does the length of reboot have, i.e. how likely are you to relapse after a 90-day reboot versus a 180-day or a 365-day reboot?
    • Are the different problems related to porn addiction (from physical problems like PIED through to emotional ones like marital problems) equally treatable?
    • Does the required length of reboot vary with age?
    • What other factors affect rebooting success?
    • Do men and women respond in the same way to the reboot process?
    • etc. etc.
It would be great if these studies were from academic neuroscientists or academic social scientists but they could be done by anyone. For example @Alexander (our founder) says
(From here.) One can imagine the NoFap team emailing members who joined in January 2019 to find out what proportion were still avoiding porn in January 2020. Even a simple statistic like that would be useful and interesting.

I am not advocating that we turn our back on the reboot process: I believe that giving up masturbation, along with the help and support I have found here have been crucial in helping me stay away from porn. It is just odd that when you look at these two things we only have quantitative data on the first one:
    1. Porn addiction is real and can negatively impact your life
    2. Rebooting helps cure porn addiction

Exactly, there isn't any. It's baseless. Almost a year later lol.

All I know is that I'm nearly at 90 days and I feel so much better. I'm an old man now getting morning wood for the first time in years. It's only happened less than a handful of times but it's improvement. I am rebooting for 90 days then I'll reassess if I need more. I

I don't doubt a reduced frequency is beneficial. In my mind porn is a multiplier of an essentially beneficial activity (almost every damn mammal on the planet does it, doubt such an energetically "wasteful" activity actually serves not only no purpose, but a detrimental effect).

Nullifying porn absolutely or partially seems wise for most.

  5. This is a personal anecdote of mine. But when I PMO a lot. I tend to over sexualize a social situation and get social anxiety. Especially, if I see someone of the opposite sex. Porn is one of those silent killers. You might not think it’s bad, but until you go out into reality and realize it’s devastating side effects, you start to realize something is wrong.

When I do NoFap, I don’t over sexualize women and social situations. Yes, I will find them attractive but I don’t over sexualize women and social situations and turn it into a porn fantasy.

The more days you do NoFap, the better the results. You will have urges, it’s all part of the PMO addiction recovery. Get some good habits and just let them pass.

Here is a detailed NoFap Success Guide for more help:

  6. I notice a psychological difference when I’m on NoFap vs when I’m PMO’ing. I have less fatigue than usual when I’m on NoFap.

Can we keep this thread on topic please: just post links and discussion about scientific studies, not personal anecdotes, not claims that lack of evidence of efficacy is evidense of lack.

It's been almost a year, the discussion is effectively over, anecdotes are all that is available for such thing.

I think you are undervaluing anecdotes though, studies rely on funding, no one is funding a study to prove or disprove nofap. The money given to NoFap LLC goes straight into some people's pockets, this site is the epitome of a money grab. Unfortunately, anecdotes are also commonly formed based on a misunderstanding of a situation, a lack of consciousness of variables.

No, the research might be happening now. Who knows when research results will come to light.

You misunderstand me. I value anecdotes enormously. My current streak relies on the anecdotal evedence I've read here. But ask yourself how many threads here are packed full of useful anecdotal advice? Thousands? Tens of thousands? This thread is about scientific research, not anecdotes.

There is research that is currently going on with this addiction that hasn't been published yet. Yes, there is some lacking information, I totally agree.

How do I know? I'm one of the people doing the research. I am planning to launch a test pilot assessment on this site, and rebootnation.org in a few months. What I find is what I will build on. I can't give too many details because it could skew the results, but I will say I am hoping to answer some of those questions in the OP.
