Nice! Glad it all went well. Did you see Rick Steves? For some reason I always picture him in Austria, blowing on a long horn that touches the ground or something. Yes you are very close to the Bs. It feels good to letter up! Congrats on your bounce back, you're almost at two weeks. Travel Board Updated!!

I was playing Scrabble the other day and realized that the letters on my tile holder spelled out the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou (Wah-gah-doo-goo). It was a tough game being bogged down with so many vowels. Burkina Faso is a small country in West Africa, with 4 even smaller countries bordering it to the south. It would be cool to do a little travel loop through all of them and rack up 5 new countries pretty quickly.

Something pretty interesting that I learned is that BF has a long history of horse riding. When the European slave traders kidnapped locals from surrounding areas and packed them onto slave ships back in the 16th century, BF was able to keep them at bay because of their mastery of horse riding. Genghis Khan would have approved. It was however colonized later on by the French in the late 1800s, and remained a French colony until 1960.

Today I checked out Andorra, as I have been P-free for 49 days. Tomorrow I can go to the next country.

Andorra is very mountainous; I did not know this. It is beautiful and cold. I watched a 6-minute video on it, and I would not go there because it is too cold, but it looks wonderful. The mountain roads look cool with the cars zipping up and down them, around all the bends, next to tall cliffs.

Angola had the most expensive city in the world until oil prices tanked (pun intended). Now it is dangerous. I watched two videos on it. In both, the tourists said they enjoyed their time in the capital Luanda, despite danger. It sounds like being a tourist in Angola is expensive and risky. I would not want to go there. However, both videos said that it was very enjoyable. Maybe my apprehension is because the videos did not explain why the visitors enjoyed their trips so much.

I did not know that Angola was having a civil war for 40 years that ended in the 2000s. This is horrible.

Wow man, I didn't know that about your first sentence, but it makes perfect sense. I haven't checked in on Angola since the pandemic happened. To be honest, the other reports on this thread about Angola aren't too positive, and it didn't impress me too much either. I think I would want to spend only 2 or 3 days there just to say I've seen it and then move on somewhere else. They can't all be winners. But next is Antigua and Barbuda! Surf and sand baybee!!!

I'm really happy to be reporting on Burundi right now, because I had a somewhat rough past 4-5 days, especially yesterday, where I came close to losing my streak. One of the things that helped me hold on yesterday was knowing that I was so close to logging into my next country. So here it is.

After Burkina Faso, I was still hooked on Africa so I hopped on a plane across the continent. Burundi is a tiny little country, one of the smallest in Africa, but with one of the largest population densities with about 10 million people. It was a Belgian colony until the 1960s when it gained its independence. But then, intense violence broke out between the Tutsi and Hutu tribes, leading to one genocide committed by the Tutsis against the Hutus in the 1970s, and another by the Hutus against the Tutsis in the 1990s. This history of ethnic conflict closely parallels that of bordering Rwanda.

Despite this history, Burundi is calm and safe to travel in, and I had no language issues as most residents can speak 3-4 languages (French, English, Swahili and Kirundi). I spent some time in the main city of Bujumbura, and then relaxed for a while on Lake Tanganyika, which is strikingly beautiful.

  10. I am happy to say that after a struggle to get to 10 days, I have finally been able to visit Afghanistan.

I watched a brilliant video on trekking in the Wakhan Corridor.

The Wakhan Corridor is a narrow strip of territory in the North East of Afghanistan and is wedged between the Pamir and Karakoram mountain ranges.

I've been trekking on what was part of the ancient silk road, sometimes pitching a tent overnight and other times staying with the locals in their huts where we ate flat bread and drank tea made with yak milk and salt.

It is a beautiful part of Afghanistan with snow topped mountains, patchwork shades of green, orange-red lichen and pink and white lithophytes growing on rocks. Looking down, I can see the turquoise Wakhan river. It's breathtaking. I feel very alive here.

Compared with other parts of the country the Wakhan is pretty safe for tourists. Even though it is hard to get to I would definitely recommend going there.

    Excellent report Gef!

I saw that video as well (if its the same one of course). The Wakhan Corridor looks spectacular. Some American friends of mine backpacked there and it was totally safe. Like being in another world.

    Congrats, and Travel Board updated!!

    First Trip Report: Afghanistan

I spent an amazing week in and around Kabul. I was surprised and overwhelmed by the hospitality of the Afghan people I met and their willingness to share a tea or a meal with a visitor. Got to enjoy some displays of traditional sports, such as Kok boru – or goat-carcass polo, and equestrian wrestling. I was able to explore the mountains around the city a little bit but their beauty left me eager to come back and see more. The unique heritage of the Afghani people with thousands of years of history being at the crossroads of different empires was a privilege to experience, if only for a short time.

Sounds like a great trip, Zori! I'll have to take a look at the goat carcass polo. A great example of not letting your resources go to waste. And otherwise great observations.

You have been awarded the Hatching Chick trophy, to celebrate a new life. Travel Board updated!!

  19. The 2nd Country on my list - this took me two Months and two weeks

Another mountain country. I was surprised how many it has in common with Afghanistan:
    - more than half of the population is Muslim (although it is only ~56% in Albania and 99,9% in Afghanistan)
    - both Countries have a long cultural history and are to this day very traditional
    - both value hospitality very high, but also family honor and have blood feuds to this day

Albania is located between Italy and Greece, so to speak, although it doesn't touch Italy - the Adriatic Sea is in between (less than 100 km). Other than Greece it also has a border with Serbia and two other countries that nobody knows.

Albania were under the Ottoman Empire's domination for 400 years and had a German Prince, called Wilhelm zu Wied, as ruler for 6 Months.

But Albania is also famous for his Orthodox Church. So its quite a religious country, although the Communists tried to expunge all religion and declared it "the first Atheist Country of the World" in 1967.

I found this video series "The traveler" by Al Jazeera that helped me to prepare for my trip. Marvellous pictures! Really! I loved the trip, I loved the Country. It was a suitable celebration for my 10 day clean :)

@discovery I didn't get your fun fact joke (sorry!) but could you please update my Travel Board?
