I wanted to write this post for 3 reasons:

1 - I wanted to make others aware that sadly K9 is no longer active! I've recently discovered that Symantec bought out Bluecoat (the company who kindly gave us K9 Web protection). For me, this product has been one of the most significant and postive things in my life, in my battle to give up / cut down my addiction, and improve myself as a person. Without K9, I wouldn't be in the good position i'm in today (compared with 4 years ago when my addiction had all but consumed my hope and my life). I'm sure this is the same for many others on this forum.

2 - I wanted to see if others are experiencing web browsing/DNS issues also? Unfortunately, i've already started experiencing issues with web browsing on my Mac, as the product/software is no longer supported. Ultimately i'm struggling to even load any/all web pages most of the time.

3 - It is looking highly likely that I will have to uninstall it :-(, and find alternatives. i am opening this up to any/all suggestions for similar software that can be used on Macs/PC's to help those of us that still require that first line of defence. I'm sure many people will have comments about "you must change yourself etc etc", but i'm a strong believer of the 'remove temptation, and that is half the battle won' ethos.

Look forward to your replies! :)

I'm using OpenDNS to filter the porn content and the online proxy servers on all of my networks.

You just need to change your DNS ip on all your Network Interfaces (To mobile phone, Wifi settings) to the OpenDNS DNS server adresses.

  4. I use Covenant Eyes. Works pretty well though it's been a long time since I "tested" it.

    Qustodio is a good one.

  7. Thanks for the info OP. Pretty disappointing news. I've been using K9 as my primary filter for a couple years now. It was free, lightweight, easy to config, and worked across multiple browsers at the network level.

The company that bought them out has now scuttled the program and is trying to nudge old users into their commercial software which is overkill for what many of us need in my opinion. Oh well it was good while it lasted. Will look into other options posted here.

Kaspersky safe kids is not bad. it has a very powerful filter.

  9. I've tried different software(net nanny, covenant eyes, cold turkey etc.) and unfortunately nothing comapres to K9. It was free but I would even pay for it. It was just too good. Unfortunately other blocking software either block too much or doesn't block enough, some of them doesn't even allow you to block specific sites.

I believe to truly recover one needs to "conquer" himself. Building a wall between your addictive compulsive behavior and porn helps you abstain but abstention does not equal recovery. It's a great tool for first few months when you're still learning to control urges, but you need to let it go, after that period. Self control is the best filter you can "install" and the only way to go, if you want to reach full recovery at some point in time. I believe in Plato's words: "For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories."
